He knew what was coming, so he politely declined interviews at first. But around 20 minutes later, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Brandon Graham was cornered again by a relentless media horde and succumbed, smiling. Always smiling. Standing just outside the NovaCare Complex after Thursday's practice during this week's organized team activities, Graham stared down the barrel of intense cross-examination about his fit in the team's 3-4 defense and his future with the organization. The team's first-round draft pick in 2010 could have blamed his tenuous position on just plain bad luck and awful circumstances, and he might have been accurate, but he didn't. He also chose not to bring up the season-ending ACL injury as a rookie that essentially ruined his second season as well. Nor did he mention having to learn a new position after the team switched to a 3-4 base defense last year under a new coaching staff, which came in after he finally proved in six starts at the end of 2012 how effective he could be as a 4-3 defensive end, collecting 5.5 sacks and forcing two fumbles. What's more, each of Graham's four seasons as a pro has ended with a different defensive coordinator, from Sean McDermott (2010) to Juan Castillo ('11) to Todd Bowles ('12) to Billy Davis ('13). No complaint from him about that, either. No, Graham instead suggested that the backward step he took last season, which was spent exclusively as a reserve, had almost everything to do with him being a little overweight after trying to make the switch from end. "That was my biggest thing," he said. "Going from defensive end to linebacker, you've got to be able to be a certain type of weight. You've got to be able to move in space a little bit. Last year, I was a lot more nervous because I was trying to do a little too much. "Now I'm much more calm and now I know where to be and know where the coaches want me to be. It's just been fun for me, man, just trying to keep working hard and show them that it's really important for me to be here."
