This Given Sunday:
Opening Sunday is always full of mishaps and gaffes, and this season’s edition was no different. Let’s get right to it.
Titans safety themselves
We saw more than one safety today, but this one stands above the rest for one simple reason. It happened three seconds into the Titans’ road game against the Steelers. Let me lay the situation down.
On the opening kickoff, the ball, kicked by the Steelers, landed short, and the Titans’ return man reached out, grabbed the ball and took a knee. The problem was he went into the field of play to get the ball, and by leaving the endzone, he took away his own option of taking the touchback.
Fortunately for the Titans, the play didn’t cost them much in the long run. The Titans’ defense was great against the Steelers, and Pittsburgh wasn’t able to score again until very late in the game. It may not have been equivalent to Dan Orlovsky’s famous run out the back of the endzone, but it was pretty close.

The New York Jets were expected to be one of the biggest jokes of the NFL season, but they managed to pull out a victory in their first game. They can thank Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David for the assist. David pushed Geno Smith after the Jets quarterback had already stepped out of bounds […]
LaVonte David is a talented young linebacker, and will make plenty of great plays during his career.
Sunday David’s aggression got the best of him after he got a personal foul called on him for shoving Geno Smith out of bounds with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
The dumb penalty allowed the Jets to attempt the game winning field goal, and escape with a 17-15 win...
Geno Smith picked a great time on Sunday to play sound football for the New York Jets, and with the help of a perfectly timed late hit, it was just enough to propel the Jets to a narrow victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With one win in his pocket, is it possible that Geno Smith will lead the Jets to a respectable record in 2013?
Well, the short and simple answer to my own...

Rookie Geno Smith will get his second start for the New York
Jets, as expected, when the team plays at New England on Thursday
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are headed to New Jersey to play the New York Jets in Week 1.
Most are not giving the Jets much of a chance in this one. Tampa Bay is more talented on both sides of the ball and the Jets are starting rookie quarterback Geno Smith under center.
Not that Tampa Bay needs any help but former Jets corner Darrell Revis is even giving away the Jets...
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan credited Geno Smith's mobility in leading Gang Green to a victory at MetLife Stadium over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The stench of the 2012 Jets season has lingered like a pile of dirty laundry and garbage around the organization for eight months.
Now the new season is here.
The Jets have a lot of new faces starting with rookie quarterback Geno Smith who will make his first official NFL start Sunday against the Buccaneers. Smith saw limited time in the preseason and was handed the starting job...
ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski made the bold claim a few weeks ago saying Colin Kaepernick could be the best quarterback in the history of the NFL. At the time, that statement seemed ludicrous and it still does now, although maybe to a lesser extent.
Kaepernick sure looked like one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the NFL on opening weekend. He enjoyed his first career 300...
