The Green Bay Packers have had a below average defense the past few years when it comes to total yards and points allowed. In 2011, they ranked dead last in total defense. Last year saw improvement as the defense improved to 22nd out of the 32 teams. Improvement is the key word for the defense this year. If the Packers can have a top 15 defense to go along with the high powered offense, there’s no reason the Packers can’t make a deep run in the playoffs. With that being said, here are five key players on the Packers defense.
5. Sam Shields
During the Packers Super Bowl run, Shields shined in the NFC Championship game against the Chicago Bears with two interceptions and a forced fumble. That playoff game solidified Shields’ spot on the 2011 roster, and he did not disappoint. The last two seasons, Shields has nine interceptions, including two during last year’s playoffs. With Charles Woodson now gone, Shields needs to keep up hi...

Second chances are hard to come by in life and in the game of football. To be successful, one must make the most of any opportunity. When Johnny Jolly arrived in Green Bay, it looked like he was going to make it big. With professional quickness and strength, Jolly seized his opportunity and made it onto the roster and into the starting lineup. With his skills, determination, and...
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A golf outing with Donald Driver has current Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones thinking that his former teammate may be having second thoughts about retirement.
Driver retired in February after 14 years with the Packers, but Jones interpreted their recent conversations to be that the franchise's all-time leading receiver might want a 15th NFL season...
Training Camp begins with a lot of optimism and apprehension. Optimism in the fact that the season has begun once again and the Packers are looking to make another run at a Super Bowl Championship. The apprehension comes from the bad news that happens at seemingly every team’s training camp. A player has either come in out of shape and failed his physical, or they have suffered...
Coach Mike McCarthy burst through the door of the Packers media room like a fullback bulldozing through the line of scrimmage, eager to get training camp started in Green Bay.
The eighth-year head coach is making a few tweaks this summer following the sting of back-to-back, second-round playoff losses - which for the perennial Super Bowl contender counts as a big disappointment...

Mike Flanagan overcame a serious leg injury to start 82 games for Green Bay
Many people will write Derek Sherrod off should his surgically-repaired right leg keep him from taking part in training camp for a second consecutive summer – a distinct possibility considering the massive offensive lineman wasn’t medically cleared for either the minicamps in May or the OTAs in June. But...
The Green Bay Packers completed negotiations with their draft class Wednesday when first-round pick Datone Jones agreed to terms on a contract.
The Packers had completed negotiations and signed their other 10 draft picks weeks ago leaving only Jones left to be done. Since a rookie wage scale was introduced two years ago with the new collective bargaining agreement holdouts have...
Let the fun - and the thumping - begin.
After they eased into playing football again, Mike McCarthy is looking forward to seeing his Green Bay Packers in pads for the first time since the end of last season.
''When you put the pads on the first time, yeah, it'll definitely be more urgency than it's been down there the last two days,'' McCarthy said Saturday...
Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy knows a season can go down the tubes in training camp.
It only takes one injury to a key player to set a team back and the coach wants to avoid that scenario.
It’s fairly impossible to get a team ready for the regular season without putting them through the grinder, but there are ways to limit the chances of disaster by being proactive...
Clay Matthews is the star of the defense, and the Packers need second-year players Nick Perry and Dezman Moses to step up.
The Green Bay Packers have signed top draft pick defensive end Datone Jones and safety Ryan McMahon on Thursday.
Jones was selected 26th overall in April out of UCLA, where he made a career-high 62 tackles (45 solo), including 19 tackles for loss, and a career-best 6 1/2 sacks in 2012. He has said the defense run by the Packers is similar to what he played in at UCLA.
