Lost in the fray of the Jets' decision to reanoint Mark Sanchez and rebuff Tim Tebow was the issue of Greg McElroy's out-of-the-blue concussion. The second year signal-caller suffered the brain injury in Week 16, when he was sacked an astonishing 11 times.

But he didn't want it to get out.

ESPNNewYork.com reports that McElroy hid his concussion symptoms "for days," telling only a few teammates of his condition and choosing to clam up to the coaches.

"He came to my room (on Tuesday night) and we talked about it," receiver Clyde Gates said. "He was hurting real bad. I was like, 'Bro, I know, I've been down that road already. I'm just saying you can't try to tough it out cause you going to end up hurting yourself. You've got to let everybody know how you really feel.' "

Guard Matt Slauson was also in the know.

"He definitely has that (warrior) mentality, but it got to the point where it was scaring him," Slauson said.

Slauson related to McElroy's mindset, having admitted to concealing at least two concussions.

"I didn't feel like it warranted (being reported)," Slauson said. "I was in bad shape, but I could focus on my plays. I figured I'd pop a couple of Aspirin and be fine."

Finally, on Thursday, McElroy confronted the training staff, complaining about headaches experienced while weightlifting. A stunned Rex Ryan eventually got wind of the news, and scrambled to name his starting quarterback -- Sanchez -- for Sunday's regular season finale.

Ryan hopes this was a much-needed wake up call.

"I think, hopefully, this will be an example to all the players," Ryan said. "Because the worst thing that could've happened is he would've gone out there with nobody knowing how he really felt and hurt himself."
