Found May 05, 2013 on Waiting For Next Year:
This morning, ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi went through the possible roster casualties in favor of the team’s five draft selections in last week’s NFL Draft. Some of the names could be a little surprising. They include last year’s seventh round pick Trevin Wade, 2011 7th-rounder Eric Hagg, and undrafted free agent Ishmaa’ily Kitchen. “McFadden’s arrival probably would most imperil the roster status of Trevin Wade. Why? Besides McFadden, the new regime signed free agent cornerbacks Kevin Barnes and Chris Owens. Although low-priced, Barnes and Owens would have to be absolute busts not to stick; each received a cash bonus to sign. The other relevant cornerback is Johnson Bademosi and his roster spot is safe because he is the baddest special teams player on the team now that Josh Cribbs is gone.” “If so, Slaughter will be given every chance to win the starting free safety job. The incumbent is 2012 undrafted free agent Tashaun Gipson, who was more impressive than 2011 seventh-round draft pick Eric Hagg. Hagg was given the starting job at last year’s minicamp.” “The most affected players if Bryant squeezes in are Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, a prototype nose tackle who did OK as an undrafted free agent while Phil Taylor recovered from pectoral muscle surgery, and Brian Sanford, a 2011 undrafted free agent who fits better as a 4-3 end.” For the record, when I went through the roster yesterday and did a quick “guestimate”, I had Kitchen and Hagg still making the roster with Wade not making the roster. The article goes on to discuss the offensive line and linebacker situations as well. Related: One Week Removed, More Browns Draft Thoughts

Pluto: Mingo was 1 of 4 “Blue Chippers” For Browns

In his Sunday notes, The Plain Dealer’s Terry Pluto talks about the some of the draft strategy for the Browns that unfolded in the first round. This includes the selection of LSU defensive lineman/linebacker prospect Barkevious Mingo instead of a potential trade down. “The Browns had four players ranked as “blue-chippers.” I could only come up with three names — Barkevious...

Browns make right move by not drafting a quarterback

The 2013 NFL Draft’s crop of quarterbacks graded out considerably lower than previous draft and it was reflected in the first round in only one being taken. However, the consensus was that the ‘value’ would come in the second or third rounds with the signal callers, but Browns GM Mike Lombardi didn’t see any that he liked. Even a Matt Barkley didn’t warrant the Browns...

Browns thoughts on Terry Pluto, ProFootballTalk, “black boxes,” and draft strategy

Who could be running the Browns today who might get the benefit of the doubt? I think it’s a good question. Sometimes I wonder if the Kraft family somehow divested the Pats, bought the Browns and brought Bill Belichick with them if Browns fans would continue point to failed draft picks like Courtney Brown as proof that the Browns were failing in the present. I don’t know how...

DE Barkevious Mingo, Cleveland Browns Barkevious Mingo is coming into the NFL a little green as he only came to the game of football in his junior year of high school.  Even though he was still new, he earned a 4 Star Rating as he was recruited and accepted a scholarship to play at LSU.  According to his Wikipedia page he got his unusual first name from his mother, as she...

Browns’ 7th Round Pick Armonty Bryant Arrested, Charged With DUI (Mugshot)

I struggle to understand what goes through some young draft picks mine when he decides to make a bonehead choice. The Cleveland Browns selected Eastern Central (Okla.) pass rusher Armonty Bryant in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft  knowing full well that he was a character risk. According to reports, Bryant was suspended for three games last season after twice being arrested...

Which Browns veteran is most likely to be replaced?

Here today, gone tomorrow. No, I’m not talking about Ezequiel Carrera or the pipeline of stating pitchers that goes from Columbus to Cleveland. In the NFL, players aren’t guaranteed next year. Every year plenty of veterans around the league sweat through roster cuts before, during and after training camp. Those wearing the Orange and Brown are no different. We’ve also seen...

One Week Removed, More Browns Draft Thoughts

One week removed from the fun and buildup of the NFL Draft, and what do we know? Well, not much. We know the Browns are bringing Barkevious Mingo, Leon McFadden, Jamoris Slaughter, Garrett Gilkey, and Armonty Bryant, along with a bunch of undrafted free agents into the fold with a shot at making the team. We know the team has 9 picks next year, including 6 in the first four rounds...

Paul Kruger, this year’s Nnamdi Asomugha?

The Cleveland Browns moved quickly when the 2013 NFL Free Agency period began, signing defensive end Paul Kruger to a five-year deal worth $40 million. Kruger had 9.0 sacks in the regular season to lead the Ravens and added 4.5 during the Ravens Super Bowl run. A second...
