Heels in the Pro’s: Giovani Bernard While we get ready, be it by going to Kenan Stadium or setting up in front of the television, for some UNC Football, here comes a small story about a former Tar Heel now in the National Football League. Cincinnati Bengals’ second round pick from their last draft, Giovani Bernard, was voted the Rookie of the Week, beating out four other first year players. As I detailed in another post about the tail back, he rushed for 50 yds and scored a TD while adding four catches for 49 yds in the team’s win over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. This is the second game in a row where the first running back picked in the 2013 NFL Draft had a very good game for his squad. For anyone wanting to know how the voting is done, it’s pretty simple… anyone can vote for their favorite rookie on NFL.com from Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST until the same time on Friday. The other two winners so far this season have been Miami kicker Caleb Sturgis (week one) and Bills’ quarterback, E.J. Manuel (week two). Giovani Bernard scores against the Packers last week While the award is well deserved for Bernard, I think that he needs an award for the best effort to get into the end zone for a score (check out the picture above). In all the tail back who brought back Running Back U to Chapel Hill has three scores this season with the Bengals, and with the way he is going it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he ends up with a double digit scores in his first season as a pro. Bernard and the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) will be in on the road this weekend as they take on the Cleveland Browns (1-2). With starting running back BenJarvis Green-Ellis “probable” (with an ankle injury) this might just mean more touches for the former UNC Football star, and that should mean more yardage and scores for the rookie.
