Marvin Austin (Heels in the Pro’s) The status of Marvin Austin making the New York Giants’ roster is still in doubt, as I blogged about a while back. But with a tremendous hit in the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game, the former Tar Heel is not the only one in the Big Apple that has a question mark when it comes to what the future holds. Austin, who was playing once again with the back ups, got a heck of a hit on Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had to be taken out of the game after that. The prognosis … a right shoulder injury. This was not the first hit that the defensive lineman got on the opposing gunslinger. On the first snap that Sanchez took Austin penetrated through the line and sacked him for a nine yard loss. A couple of minutes later, just as the Jets QB released the ball, the third year 6’2′/312 lbs defensive tackle pounded him into the ground. “Coach called a play, and I just pretty much overlapped over Hankins,” Austin said. “And then when I saw [Sanchez], s—, I just hit him. I hit him hard. I felt it.“ From ESPN NY the comment about the play was that it was the most memorable of a not so greatly executed game. That has to be good news for the former UNC Football star and second round pick with lots of potential and even more hype. With the first cuts coming up this week, having something to show to the coaches could be the break that Austin needs, who right now is listed as the third stringer in the depth charts. But just like many of us who watched the game, or the high (or low) lights of it, Marvin Austin is a bit puzzled by Sanchez being out on the field… “Yeah, I mean, they got a huge investment in him. So I was a little surprised,” Austin said. “I just knew that I gotta go out there and hit him. I gotta go out there and perform, and show ‘em that I can play in this league. Who better to do it against than the Jets’ quarterback?“ Could these couple of plays have gotten Austin at least past the first cuts? It will be a couple of days before we know. But if he wants to be assured of making the roster the young man needs to play just as hard in his final pre season game when the Giants take on the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. One thing is certain though, while no one might ever say it, deep down, if Austin was to make the cut, it would be the first time that a Giants player needed to thank a Jets head coach for making the squad, while a Jets player might thank that same coach for losing his starting spot!
