Fullback Henry Hynoski is not going to carry the ball early or often, but as he did against the New York Jets on Saturday night, he may hit opposing teams with the occasional surprise attack.

Hynoski's two-yard plunge for a first down on 3rd-and-1 wasn't anticipated. It never so much as crossed the minds of Gang Green, nor did it cross minds of those watching the game. Not because it wasn't possible, but because it had never happened before. It was, literally, Hynoski's very first carry as a member of the New York Giants.

“There was no evidence of that ever on film or anything so I think they were just really shocked when I got it," Hynoski told the New York Post. “It was a play design just to get the first down and we got a yard extra."

The bruising fullback knew if he came up short on that third down play it would likely be the final time the ball ever touched his hands. So he churned his feet, bowled forward and made sure he landed on the right side of that first down marker.

“That’s my first one … start it off on a good note," Hynoski said. “It’s something we’re slowly working into. I knew if I didn’t get the first down I probably wouldn’t get a carry again. I made sure I did, just put my head down and moved forward and got it done."

Given their recent history of short yardage futility, perhaps the Giants have stumbled onto something pleasant and unexpected here. Maybe, just maybe, the Hynoserous will develop into an alternate short yardage option for Tom Coughlin & Co. Maybe.

“It was a plus for us because we’ve not always the last couple of years been very good in that area," Coughlin said. “Gave us one more form of weapon to be utilized in that circumstance. That was a good thing."

One thing is for certain: after getting that first down, Hynoski is going to see more carries at some point this season.
