Shortly after draft mate WR DeVier Posey signed with the Houston Texans last night, the team finally wrapped up rookie contract negotiations by coming to terms with third round offensive guard Brandon Brooks. Similar to Posey, Brooks signed a four-year deal worth $2.8 million that includes a signing bonus of just over $617K, as was first reported by Mark Berman of Fox 26. Brooks’ contract will pay him base salaries of $390K, $500K, $590K, and $702K.

Brooks was a standout lineman at Miami (OH) University. At 6’5”, 345 lbs., Brooks is the Texans’ largest lineman and would stand as one of the more massive in the NFL. Brooks has many strengths, mostly centered around his size and adequate quickness. There was some initial concern that Brooks would struggle in the Texans’ zone-blocking scheme, but proved during OTAs that he was quick enough out of his stance. Brooks did however cause a stir when head coach Gary Kubiak called him out for being too overweight. Brooks has reportedly dropped some weight and is in good condition.

With all rookies now signed, the Texans can turn their focus to the start of training camp at the end of this week. Training camp is always imperative for rookies still adjusting to life in the NFL, so finally inking Brooks and Posey assures the team they will be present at the start of training camp ready to contribute and compete.
