Going against general manager Rick Smith's policy of no contract negotiations during the season, the Houston Texans stepped up and signed quarterback Matt Schaub to a long-term deal on Sunday after the Texans' victory over the Miami Dolphins.

The extension is for four years with a reported maximum value of $62 million, with $24.75 million guaranteed.

The move headed off a possible off-season bidding war for Schaub's services, when he was set to enter free-agency.

"I am excited to continue my career here in Houston and finish my career here," said Schaub

Over Schaub's nine-year career he has quietly built the reputation of a quarterback that can get it done.

Since being traded to the Houston Texans from the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 Schaub has built an impressive set of statistics, which place him in the top ten active NFL quarterbacks.

Among his career statistics Schaub has a 92.3 percent passer rating, 64.3 percent pass completion rate, 18,202 passing yards, and has thrown 99 touchdown passes.

Some question the wisdom of signing a 31-year-old quarterback, that is coming off a injury-shortened season, to a long-term contract.

Especially when the three other teams in the AFC South have a youth movement going on at the quarterback position. The Jacksonville Jaguars have second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Second-year quarterback Jake Locker has gotten the starting job with the Tennessee Titans. The Indianapolis Colts have No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck as their starter.

The Texans have chosen to go with a proven commodity in Schaub. I cannot fault that logic at all because all Schaub does is win football games.

The Texans are making big moves in an effort to get to the Super Bowl. The Texans already had running back Arian Foster and pro bowl receiver Andre Johnson locked into long-term contracts; with the signing of Schaub they will keep the top offensive performers together for the forseeable future.
