Within the last several days, a number of NFL players were arrested on various accounts to continue the offseason of league-wide trouble. Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was arrested for domestic violence, Denver Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil was arrested on a gun charge, and Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch was arrested for suspicion of DUI. If for no other reason, NFL teams and fans can’t wait until the season starts so hopefully the trouble making ceases. Fans of the Houston Texans will of course notice none of their players have been in the news for arrests, just the typical marginal coverage for good deeds within the community that often gets overlooked by national media outlets.

Just this past week, Texans QB Matt Schaub and his wife Laurie donated $200K to the Texas Children's Hospital on behalf of Schaub’s Gr8 Hope Foundation. DE J.J. Watt, along with his Justin J. Watt Foundation, continued working with UnitedHealthcare and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston to undertake childhood obesity initiatives. These are just the more recent examples of an offseason full of Texans players giving back to their communities and imposing positive influences on all those around them.

It’s no surprise that the Texans are a successful team on the field. These off-the-field activities, coupled with the continued preparation for the upcoming season, keep the players focused and out of trouble. This carries over onto the football field and is a NFL-wide phenomenon. With the exception of the New York Giants (one DUI charge), all the top teams in the NFL have largely been absent from bad publicity as it stems from players breaking the law. When players, and people in general, do the right thing in all aspects of their lives, they are rewarded with success. The Texans undoubtedly have one of the best locker room environments and group of men who do the right thing on and off the field, thus translating to their recent success.

With less than two weeks away from training camp, expect the NFL delinquencies to die down as players go back to work. Texans fans shouldn’t worry about their players making the news for law related issues, instead should be getting excited for a season with the highest expectations in franchise history.
