Once again, for the second consecutive draft, the Patriots may be searching for a hybrid 3-4 outside linebacker, one who can rush the passer and set the edge against the run. One who can draw double teams and still make players, while being versatile enough drop into coverage.
Essentially, they are looking for Willie McGinest.
The original elephant linebacker, McGinest became a Patriots star from 1994-2005. While the Patriots look for another one in the draft to play opposite Jermaine Cunningham and upgrade a position that also includes Tully Banta-Cain and Rob Ninkovich, how do they find one?
In colleague Karen Guregian’s NFL Notes, she asks McGinest this question.
“You have to be talented, you have to be tough, because you have to be able to take on the linemen and fullbacks and tight ends and play in the trenches vs. the run game,” McGinest said. “So you have to be sturdy and strong enough and tough enough to handle that, but you also have to be agile, and smart enough...
