So far, GM Ryan Grigson and the Indianapolis Colts have added Arthur Jones, D’Qwell Jackson and managed to retain Vontae Davis. Grigson needs to continue beefing up the defense. In fact, I would love to see an ALL defensive draft in May, the anti-2012 draft class if you will. If the Colts truly want to build the monster they must stack their roster on the defensive side of the ball and adding players on cheap rookie contracts doesn’t hurt either. There are certainly talented players on the defense, but injuries are bound to happen and there is always room for improvement. Not to mention, the Colts are still looking for a starter at safety. One could be drafted in the second or third round and provide insurance in the defensive backfield or even contribute as a starter. Some names that have been thrown out there are Washington State’s Deone Bucannon and Northern Illinois’ Jimmie Ward. Ward is the most intriguing prospect I have heard, but he may or may not be there by the time pick number 59 rolls around. Ward highlights: Corner is another position that could be looked at via the draft. The name I have heard over and over is Stanley Jean-Baptiste. A big corner with a lot of potential. Pairing him with the secondary expert that is head coach Chuck Pagano could be a great move. Jean-Baptiste highlights: Finally, a front 7 upgrade is something of importance for this defense. Outside linebacker, inside linebacker or defensive line, doesn’t matter, each position could use an infusion of talent. DaQuan Jones of Penn State is an intriguing player that could really improve the middle of the line. He would be in rotation with Josh Chapman, and together, they could be a handful for opposing offenses. Jones college game tape: Adding 2nd and 3rd round talents to this defense could go a long way to alleviate the woes that were exposed during the divisional round playoff game. Not to mention, create a defense that could really do some damage and help out an already prolific Andrew Luck-led offense. If Grigson, Pagano and the Colts want to truly build the monster in Indianapolis, they must focus hard on the defense this upcoming draft. I expect them to do just that and really boost the performance of the defensive unit and, in turn, the entire team. Go Colts!
