While the Internet was abuzz yesterday with talk that Robert Mathis might be heading to New York to join the Jets, Indianapolis Colts beat reporter Philip B. Wilson wrote yesterday that he had no knowledge of any such moves and that moreover while the Colts might be shutting it down for 2011, they’re not throwing in the towel for 2011.
… he was just theorizing, [in my opinion]. Why? Because it would make sense, if the Colts had no intention to re-sign Wayne or Mathis, to deal them and get something before losing them.
I’m of the opinion the Colts have to find a way to re-sign both. Trading them now not only sends an obvious message this season is lost — yes, we know it is — but also that the Colts would be prepared to return in 2012 without a No. 1 WR or Dwight Freeney’s Pro Bowl pass-rush partner.
Say what you want about Colts moves, but it doesn’t make sense to deal away what you can’t replace.
