Bill Barnwell is up to his usual tricks at Grantland. This time, he’s tired of hearing that Flacco is an elite quarterback and wants a new measure of quarterback value. Flacco gets credit for piling up wins, which Barnwell thinks is unfair: For whatever good or bad Flacco provides, he has spent his entire career as the starting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, who perennially possess one of the league’s best defenses. He also has Ray Rice and a solid running game to go alongside him on offense. It’s safe to say that a win by, say, Cam Newton usually requires more work from the quarterback than one by Flacco. I agree with this wholeheartedly. In response, Barnwell tries to capture quarterback value by creating an “expected wins” measure based on points allowed by the defense and comparing this to actual wins. He argues that a quarterback with more actual wins than expected wins is doing well because he is scoring more points than average. An example helps explain the concept. Fir...

Ravens Birk voices opposition to same-sex marriage

Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk has voiced his opposition to same-sex marriage, a view that opposes that of teammate Brandon Ayanbadejo. In an article printed Sunday in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Birk wrote, ''Ideas have consequences, and laws shape culture. Marriage redefinition will affect the broader well-being of children and the welfare of society. As a Christian...

Ravens S Reed excels on field and as a leader

Ravens safety Ed Reed has taken on more of a leadership role in the locker room, and the eager youngsters on the team are reaping the benefits of his advice. Reed has become a tireless teacher on topics including film study and keeping fit before and during a long NFL season. Reed knows quite a bit about both, given that he's tallied 59 interceptions, scored 14 touchdowns and...

NFL First Quarter Report Card: Baltimore Ravens

The 2012 Baltimore Ravens have had many ups and downs to begin the NFL first quarter this season, both on and off the field. The Ravens found out that they lost Terrell Suggs for the first half of the season prior to the start of training camp, and wide receiver Torrey Smith found out that he lost his brother in a motorcycle accident just hours before the team’s third game. Through...

Matt Birk writes column in opposition of gay marriage

Gay marriage has become a hot topic among some NFL players, and Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk is the latest to engage in the discussion. The issue became publicized when a Maryland politician sent Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti a letter requesting that he prevent Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who supports gay marriage, from expressing his divisive political views. Vikings...

Ravens return from break to prepare for Chiefs

Following a stretch of four games in 18 days, three consecutive days off for the Baltimore Ravens felt like summer vacation. The Ravens (3-1) last played Thursday night, beating Cleveland 23-16, before returning to work on Monday to prepare for a road game in Kansas City on Sunday. Cornerback Lardarius Webb says, ''The guys were moving around excellent, like we were off...

Fantasy Football 2012 Week 5 Quarterback Rankings: Top 25

Ravens QB Joe Flacco is a top ten fantasy option this week. Here we are folks, it is already week five of the NFL season and before we know it the fantasy football regular season is going to be half over. Most leagues play a 13 or 14 game regular season, with the playoffs finishing in week 16, so if you are not playing with a sense of urgency yet, you should be. Hopefully your...

On to Kansas City for Ravens...

The Ravens are 3-1 coming off 10 days rest while the struggling Chiefs are 1-3. Can you spell "Trap Game" ?I think coach Harbaugh is able to get his team in the "proper focus" frame of mind...and to avoid getting trapped into looking past the struggling Chiefs. The Ravens will try to again make things difficult for Matt Cassel, whose turnovers have been one...

Baltimore Ravens (3-1) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-3)

Baltimore Ravens (3-1) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) I ranked the Ravens ranked 3rd in my Power Rankings and called them the 2nd best team in the AFC behind Houston because of the head-to-head win over New England and their superior yards per play differential over New England. I think that New England and Baltimore are both going to finish around 12-4 and with Houston likely to win...
