Chicago Bears Football – The Chicago Bears have a lot of decisions to make in the off-season about who to keep, who to let go and who to draft. One of those discussions has to be about the future of the backup running back Michael Bush. Michael Bush Isn’t Cutting It In 2014 Michael Bush is going to take up just under $4 million in cap space. He has been a productive player in the past, yet in 2013 he only put up 197 yards on 67 carries. On the same note, he also only picked up three touchdowns on the year. In the past, Bush thrived in the backup role behind Darren McFadden in Oakland, but last year he recorded career lows in nearly every major statistical category. So, what happened last year? The Bears offense went through significant changes last season under head coach Marc Trestman. The running back position has become eminently important with Matt Forte being the focal point, both running and catching passes out of the backfield. Where does this leave a big bruiser like Michael Bush? Prior to last year, Ford showed an ability to break through the line and some solid breakaway speed. Still, is he the right fit for the new Chicago Bears offense? More importantly, is he worth the money? Trestman’s Offense Designed For Versatile Backs Matt Forte put up career high numbers and played in all 16 games. It was a season of endurance for the Chicago Bears number one back. The threat of Forte in the backfield and as a receiver is one of the keys to the Marc Trestman offense which was so successful last season. So, when we are looking for a number two back, where should the Chicago Bears look? The Marc Trestman Effect It is possible that Michael Ford is the number two back that the Chicago Bears are looking for. He only played special teams in 2013; however, in the current system, perhaps developing the rookie out of Louisiana is a smart move, both financially and for the future. It is just one of the many tough decisions which head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery will have to contend with.
