Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is enjoying learning new coach Marc Trestman’s multi-faceted offense, but he’ll tell you don’t expect the greatest show on earth just yet. Cutler who has been through a few NFL offenses will tell you that it takes time for an offense to jell. Furthermore, to install an entire playbook it would take about three years. Terminology, personnel, and adjustments are parts of refining an offense that can’t be done over one offseason. So Cutler is putting out the disclaimer that they should have a better passing offense, but like fine wine it will get better over time. “It takes time,” Cutler said. “It’s every day, just trying to get better and trying to learn the offense so that it’s less thinking and more just reacting out there and I think the guys are doing a great job of taking it home with them and really studying it. With the amount of time we’re allowed here, you can’t really get in as much as you want to get in. Guys are doing a great job and we’ll see where we’re at when we get to training camp. But right now I think we’re on pace,” Cutler said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “There are similarities and there are differences,” Cutler said of the current system. “There are only so many different things you can do on a football field. I think (offensive coordinator/line coach Aaron) Kromer and everyone else involved and Marc have a great understanding of how to get guys open, how to protect the football, how to open up gaps in the run game. But right now we’re just kind of trying to learn the basics of the offense. Really whenever you want to get into it, it’s a three-year process to learn an offense. It just is what it is. It takes time. It’s hard to go out there Year 1 and blow the doors off. But we’re going to do the best we can with the time allowed and we’ll see where we’re at.”
