As of Sunday night, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones had not spoken with Dez Bryant since the wide receiver was arrested on July 16 for allegedly assaulting his mother at her DeSoto home two days earlier. Jones, who was a guest on "The Score With Babe Laufenberg" on CBS 11 in Dallas, repeatedly called the incident a "very serious matter." But until he receives all of the information about the incident, Jones is choosing not to speak with one of his top playmakers. "He has visited with his coaches," Jones explained Sunday night. "He has visited with our support staff, which we're very proud of. But I'm still gathering information, and should be. When we do that, then at that time then I'll visit with him." When asked a follow up question about Bryant, Jones continued to preach about waiting for all of the information to be revealed. "We do want to support Dez, his mother and we want our support staff to be able to do that," he said. "That's the right way to go here. We've got to look at Dez's background, candidly. That's no excuse for anything. When I look at it, I know that he has made progress in some areas. "Let's see how this pans out. I'm kind of playing option quarterback here and reading it as we go." The misdemeanor assault charge is not Bryant's first time getting into trouble off the field since being drafted by the Cowboys in 2010. The Oklahoma State product has been issued a criminal trespass warning at a Dallas mall, faced multiple lawsuits for failure to repay loans, and detained by police in Miami for an altercation at a night club. Earlier Sunday, Jones admitted to media members at the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Calif. that Bryant needs extra attention, extra care that couldn't possibly be given to every player on the roster. "You certainly couldn't have 53 players ultimately on your team that you give the kind of consideration and time that you do to Dez," Jones said. "But you say, 'Well, a No. 1 draft pick and an outstanding player, why not?'" Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
