Rich Cimini of ESPN New York believes that the Jets are desperate to bench QB Mark Sanchez.
Cimini notes that people who spoke to owner Woody Johnson following the team’s embarrassing loss to the Titans last season said there was a “never again” look in his eyes.
The Jets have made it very clear all preseason that they are looking to give rookie Geno Smith every opportunity to win the team’s starting job, which was evident this week when he received first-team reps each day in practice and was later named the starter against the Giants on Saturday.
Sanchez hasn’t done enough to prevent them from moving with Smith as their starter, assuming of course that he doesn’t implode against the Giants.
According to Cimini, it’s unrealistic to expect Smith to have a breakout season like a number of rookie quarterbacks had last year because Smith has no background with a West Coast offense.
The Jets will be risking a lot by rushing in a young quarterback, who despite his upside, has been less than stellar in both training camp and preseason, with the possibility of spoiling his development.
