A few months back, Antonio Cromartie stated that he’s the Jets’ second best receiver behind Santonio Holmes. At the time, the comment irked fellow teammates and sparked a short-lived controversy. With the way things are now shaping up, though, Cromartie could have just catapulted to No. 1.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Tuesday the “feeling in (the) organization” is that Holmes will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Holmes suffered the injury during the team’s blowout loss to the Niners on Sunday, when he went down without contact, typically an ominous sign (see: Revis, Darrelle).

Confirming Mehta’s report was ESPNNewYork.com’s Rich Cimini, whose source said Holmes may have suffered a Lisfranc injury (torn ligaments in the mid-foot area), and surgery — along with “several months” of recovery time — appears likely.

“The Jets are bracing for the likelihood of not having Holmes for the remainder of the season,” writes Cimini. “… The expectation is that his foot injury is season-ending.”

Though coach Rex Ryan has remained mum up to this point, he’s due to deliver the “sobering diagnosis” during his Wednesday news conference.

This is yet another crippling blow to a Jets squad still reeling from the loss of Revis, who tore his ACL in Week 3, and smarting from their 34-0 loss, arguably the worst in the Ryan era.
