The Jets’ defensive front seven is expected to be one of their strengths this season and outside linebacker Quinton Coples is expected to play a large part in that group. But Coples might not be ready for the Sept. 8 season opener against Tampa Bay because he suffered a hairline fracture in his right ankle during Saturday night’s 37-13 win over Jacksonville and will miss three to four weeks according to multiple media reports. The injury is not expected to require surgery according to reports. The season opener is three weeks from Sunday. Coples left the sideline near the end of the first half and walked back to the locker room without his cleat or sock on his right foot. Jets coach Rex Ryan said after the game that he wouldn’t have an update on Coples until Sunday. The Jets drafted Coples No. 16 overall last year and he played defensive end as a rookie. He started two games and had 5½ sacks. This year the Jets moved him to the rush outside linebacker spot in their 3-4 defense. He will still often play along the line but will usually rush the quarterback from a stand-up position. Antwan Barnes is listed as Coples’ backup on the depth chart. Barnes is a seventh-year pro who spent the past three seasons in San Diego and signed with the Jets in the offseason. His best year was 2011 when he started five games (the only five starts of his career) and had 11 of his 23½ career sacks.
