Tim Tebow was brought in to help the New York Jets win football games. There is no publicity involved in this, regardless of the huge press conference the team is having for who they have referred to as a backup QB. When was the last time that a backup QB signing needed a press conference?
Jets owner Woody Johnson wants everyone know that his team works for the fans, and this was a decision to win football games for the fans. His faith in Mark Sanchez hasn’t wavered, either. Well, maybe at least early in games it has.
After saying playing quarterback in the NFL is “among the hardest jobs you can have from a pressure standpoint,” he said that “pressure is something that Mark has no problem with. Neither does Tim Tebow from what I gather. I don’t know him very well. Mark is very, very good. We’ve all seen him in the fourth quarter. Wish he would get better in the first quarter perhaps. In the fourth quarter, he realizes he’s got to make some improvements.”
Not the most ringing endorsement for Sanchez, and I would challenge the idea that he is a good 4th quarter QB. You want to see a good 4th quarter QB, look at your co-tenant.
Oh, that guy that brings more attention than any other player in the league, Tim Tebow? Yeah, it’s all about football, says Woody.
“I think Tim Tebow will be a good addition to the team. From a football standpoint, he adds flexibility, versatility, he’s a great athlete, he’s a big athlete. He can do a lot of things besides being quarterback, besides being the backup quarterback. I think all those things are going to make us a better and stronger team going forward. I’m excited to have him on board.”
While it is highly unlikely the Jets traded for Tebow as a response to the Giants winning the Super Bowl, it is hard to not think that there was some motivation to grab headlines in NY. It is very plausible that he was brought in to try and get a “nice guy” into the beleaguered locker room. However, some Jets aren’t big fans of him, we just don’t know who.
Regardless, Tim Tebow will be officially announced as a member of the New York Jets in front of the world at 12pm today. In the words of an Arena League great, “Get your popcorn ready.”
