April 8, 2009– Apparently a little booze goes a long way in getting Yankee’s right-hander Joba Chamberlain to open up. Like a half-empty bottle of Crown Royal on his passenger seat, for example.

Pulled over for speeding last October in Lincoln, Nebraska, Joba first assumed the cop knew who he was. “I came from Florida,” Chamberlain said, “and obviously I play for the Yankees.” Obviously, because anyone stupid enough to keep a half-empty bottle of top-shelf whiskey on their passenger seat must be an athlete. There’s room under car seats for a reason, Joba. Booze, drugs and guns! You really need to arrange a sit down with Plaxico Burress.

State Trooper Michael Grummert and Chamberlain really hit it off, making small talk on everything from reciting the alphabet backwards to living in New York. When asked what he thinks of the Yankees hometown, Joba told the cop that “opening a door and saying please and thank you” were rare. Thank goodness Joba finally had an outlet to get such strong feelings of his chest.

He went on to label New Yorkers as rude and call city drivers cutthroat, comparing them to Nebraska’s more courteous drivers: “The biggest thing that I’ve noticed driving here and there is if you let somebody in, they open the window and say ‘thank you,’ ” Chamberlain said about driving drunk around Nebraska. “In New York, they might hit you. Yeah, it’s a joke.” I must admit, as a New Yorker, if someone rolled down their window at me, I would probably just shoot them. So maybe Joba has a point. Maybe there is a difference between New Yorkers and Nebraskans.

Chamberlain even takes a shot at Yankees legend Yogi Berra, who he once met in the locker room. Joba’s anecdote: “I go, ‘Yogi, what the **** are you doing here?” Yogi replied, “You know what? It’s too cold for my old ass to be here.” Not as funny as he used to be, but still sharp as a tack. Joba even takes a shot at Yogi: “No ********, he might not be as tall as the front of you car.” Of course, he’s also really old, so I can only assume he’s shrunk since his playing days. It happens. More importantly, Joba needs to learn that people with strange names need to stick together.

The arrest video has been released on thesmokinggun.com, which features the amiable 23-year-old performing a few sobriety tests. See the video here.

Chamberlain was pulled over last Oct. 18 for doing 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. He had been heading home from every athlete’s best friend, the local strip club. A Breathalyzer test revealed Joba’s blood alcohol content to be .134 at the time of the arrest. This past week he pleaded guilty to the DUI charge, receiving 9 months of probation and losing his license for 60 days.
