At the MIT Sloan Analytics Conference, Patriots president Jonathan Kraft recalled the story of how the Patriots selected Tom Brady. The Patriots had recently signed Drew Bledsoe to a large contract and Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft were against taking a quarterback as they wanted to build a contender around Bledsoe. Luckily, there was one man who saw irresistible value in Tom Brady. That was Bill Belichick. I have to go back and give Bill [Belichick] and Scott Pioli, who were running our personnel department at the time, a little bit of credit here. We had Drew Bledsoe on our team at the time and we had just given him a large contract. It was Bill's first draft and we had a lot of needs. Brady was rated pretty highly on the board and in the fifth round, Bill walked over to the board, I clearly remember this, and he picked up Brady's card, looked at Scott, and said 'What's Brady still doing here? This is too much value to be sitting here and this kid is ...

New England Patriots: Post-Combine Stock Watch

New England Patriots: Post-Combine Stock WatchFollow Alex on Twitter @isportsPeters or email him stuff at isportspeters@gmail.com   The NFL Scouting Combine has come and gone, and teams are now gathering to pore over drill results of various prospects, as well as their game tape, interviews, and reports from coaches and teammates. And somewhere, in a bunker half a mile underground...

Andre Carter: Playing for Patriots ‘gives you a different prespective’

New England Patriots defensive end Andre Carter shared some insights on the team during a Q&A with ESPN.com’s John Keim. “Being with New England gives you a different perspective, especially this year,” he said, via Mike Reiss. “We had a lot of major injuries and a lot of key guys out. We could have turned it in early. But Bill [Belichick] kept us humble and hungry. He...

Aaron Dobson Says He Plans To Work Out With Tom Brady In Los Angeles

The New England Patriots aren’t allowed to formally work out as a team until the offseason program kicks off April 21, but that doesn’t mean the players aren’t allowed to work out together in an unorganized fashion. Aaron Dobson told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe that he plans to travel to Los Angeles to work out with quarterback Tom Brady. This is not uncommon for Patriots...

Alfonzo Dennard reports to jail, expected to serve 35 days

AP New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has reported to a Lincoln jail to begin his 60-day term for a 2012 assault on a police officer. According to the Associated Press, Dennard reported to the Lancaster County Adult Detention Facility Saturday morning. Dennard will have to serve at least 35 days in jail, after credit for good behavior and three days already served...

Report: Patriots could cut Danny Amendola if he’s not traded

New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola could be released this offseason if the team is unable to find a trade partner, says Dan Pompei of Bleacher Report. “NFL teams say the name of Danny Amendola has been floated in trade talks,” Pompei writes. “The Patriots signed the wide receiver to a five-year, $28.5 million contract last offseason, but Amendola struggled to...

Jonathan Kraft: Bill Belichick’s Analytical Intellect Gives Patriots Advantage

New England Patriots president Jonathan Kraft wouldn’t get into specifics, but he gave an outline into how his team has been so successful since Bill Belichick took over the team as head coach and general manager in 2000. Kraft praised Belichick’s capacity to take an analytical approach while also possessing the ability and experience to coach at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics...

Jimmy Graham Franchised to Saints, but the Patriots Can Still Make an Offer

Jimmy Graham has been unsurprisingly franchise tagged by New Orleans. What is surprising is that it has been a non-exclusive tag, meaning teams can offer Graham a contract (that NO can match) as long as they part with two first round picks. Bill Belichick is notoriously carefree about his first rounders. Plus with the new cap space increases, there's also the ability...

David Moyes Needs to Learn From Bill Belichick and “Do Your Job”

Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots of the National Football League, is a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the winningest coaches in the history of the American sport. The overriding philosophy for Belichick and his teams has been a simple one: “Do your job.” In May 2013, at a sports symposium, Belichick described the basics behind his philosophy...

Patriots Have An “Important Decision” To Make Regarding QB Ryan Mallett

Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald writes that the New England Patriots will have a “pretty important decision” to make regarding the backup quarterback position. As of now, the Patriots currently have Ryan Mallett in place as Tom Brady‘s understudy. However, he’s entering the final year of his contract and he is largely unproven up to this point. According to Guregian...

Mallett’s time could pass before it comes

The Patriots have a pretty important decision to make that’s about Tom Brady, but not directly. It’s about the backup plan for the Pro Bowl quarterback, which ultimately leads to his successor plan. Currently, that backup plan involves Ryan Mallett. The question is whether the Pats should continue to hold onto the fourth-year pro, who has just one career pass completion and...

Top 5 free agent cornerbacks the Patriots could sign

AP PhotoThe Patriots enter the 2014 offseason with a lot of very interesting questions about their future. Back-to-back losses in the AFC championship game coupled with Tom Brady's advancing age (believe it or not, Tom Terrific will turn 37 this August) have led to concerns about how much longer the Patriots window for contention will be open, along with the question of...

Vote: What Was The ‘Best Picture’ Of 2014?

The Oscar for best picture will be presented at Sunday’s 86th annual Academy Awards, but in the meantime let’s take a look at some actual photographs that defined Boston sports in the past year. In arguably the most stunning comeback Tom Brady orchestrated all season, the Patriots quarterback connected with Kenbrell Thompkins with only five seconds remaining against the New Orleans...

Blake Bortles was said NFL guys have asked about his girlfriend Lindsey Duke

It’s one thing for blogs to make galleries of a potential NFL quarterback’s girlfriend, it’s another for NFL officials to ask whether or not she’ll be around if they come to town. “I got a couple girlfriend questions…Some awkward, ‘If we come to town will she be there for dinner?’, stuff like that.” Just think about it this way Blake, Tom Brady had to play in the...

Jonathan Kraft: Wes Welker’s agent had unrealistic expectations

Patriots president Jonathan Kraft told a sprawling crowd of sports statistic aficionados that if Tom Brady were to go through the NFL draft gauntlet now, even with a healthy amount of new analytics to analyze the now veteran quarterback, he still would’ve likely been a late-round draft pick. Kraft was participating in the “Building a Dynasty” panel session with former Chicago...
