In case you're thinking that the NFL settlement with the players for $765 million in the concussion lawsuit is a lot of money, the NFL gets more than that each year in TV rights. Per vendor. In other words, you now know where your subscription fee to NFL Red Zone goes. ESPN already signed off on the settlement deal by backing out oof the documentary production about concussions. The all-sports network said it's because they were feeling the pressure from Fox Sports 1 and they decided to focus on hard-core programming. Covering Tim Tebow's chances of making the Patriots' roster was clearly draining their resources and manpower commitments. Meanwhile, that unimpeachable NFL coverage source, the Farmer's Almanac, is weighing in on the Super Bowl. No, really. It says there's an 80 percent chance it will snow. A lot. That means Jim Cantore just became the NFL's most sought-after free agent. Unless you're the Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars or Carolina Panthers, that is. Although they're all rumored to be going to the Super Bowl. If they can get enough tickets. Meanwhile... *** BRADY BUNCH Tom Brady went home to Michigan last week and spoke to his beloved Wolverines varsity. A preseason pep talk. Apparently though, it was the Lions who got the message. They devoured him in an exhibition -- uh, preseason game in Detroit. That's what happens when he uses his own notes instead of the speech Gisele prepared for him. *** HEY, ESPN, ABOUT RAY LEWIS Joe Flacco says he loves Ray Lewis, but that 90 percent of the time, he never knew what Lewis was talking about in those videotaped pep talks he regularly gave that were broadcast all over the networks and preserved on YouTube. Understanding even only 10 percent actually puts Flacco way ahead of teammates who understood zero percent of what Lewis was talking about. Plus, as we all know, and just ask Ray Lewis about it, God was on Baltimore's side in the Super Bowl. But the "Whose Side Is God On" angle is allegedly what got ESPN interested in bringing Lewis in as an NFL analyst; he clearly has the best insights on whose side God really is on. Jerry Falwell just rolled over. God was certainly on Lewis's side in a certain murder trial. How else did his heavy-hitting testimony against his two co-defendants enable both of them to walk while Lewis settled for a misdemeanor plea? Lewis was actually the only one in the trial to plead guilty. But he wasn't the only one who walked, was he? So when Flacco says he doesn't understand 90 percent of what Lewis is talking about, he meant the jury too. Can't wait to see what percentage of ESPN's audience understands what Lewis is talking about. *** MARK SANCHEZ IS MY HERO Head Coach Rex Ryan had Mark Sanchez in an exhibition - uh, preseason game at the very end. He had a bunch of high school JV players blocking for him and running routes for him. Now Sanchez is hurt and likely won't start in the opener. Which was just what moon-walking, sidestepping, hip-hopping Rex Ryan wanted, so Geno Smith can start. Hey, it's a free country, right? Ryan, meanwhile, is going to love being Detroit's defensive coordinator next year and Sanchez and fiancee Ines Saenz will love living in Nashville, where he'll be backing up the immortal Jake Locker. *** ...AND FINALLY Fox is saying slots for Super Bowl ads are 85 percent sold and are pulling down a roughly $4 million price tag. The NFL is saying the money will be going toward maintenance of the Giants' MetLife Stadium electrical circuitry, especially in the third quarter if the game's a blowout. The network is saying the money is going toward the contract of its highest-profile, on-air talent at Fox Sports 1. Regis Philbin. By: Howard Schlossberg Twitter: @HSchlossberg
