The Kansas City Chiefs’ signing of former Oakland Raiders’ cornerback Stanford Routt is a good move that gives the Chiefs added flexibility as we head into free agency and look ahead to the NFL draft, now just two months away. Adding Routt allows the Chiefs to make Brandon Carr expendable on the free agent market. By not having to worry about Carr, Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli is able to put all his resources—including the franchise player tag—into re-signing Dwayne Bowe at a manageable price tag. Routt is a similar player to Carr in that they both have long arms that can be used to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage effectively. ESPN’s Scouts Inc., expresses concern over Routt’s ability to use his speed in recover if he is beat off the ball, and the corner is also panned for some questionable route-recognition skills.
