Active is not the word to describe the Kansas City Chiefs at the start of the NFL free agency. Extremely busy would be more appropriate. And 2005 first round pick, Alex Smith, was the only playoff game winning, free agent quarterback available. Smith is just one year removed from leading the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship game against the New York Giants.Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh has been given the praise for “fixing” Smith. The emergence of Colin Kaepernick, who was drafted by Harbaugh, made Smith expendable.Kansas City Chiefs head coach and former successful quarterback evaluator, Andy Reid, is giving up a second round pick to get Smith. This move should reflect on what Reid thinks of the quarterback class in the 2013 Draft.Andy Reid and new GM John Dorsey are happy with the Smith acquisition, but have not stopped there.Quarterback Chase Daniel was signed as a high-end backup to Smith to continue to push him much like Kaepernick did. In the past the Chiefs would anoint a starter and leave it at that. This time it’s more of a pressure/competition situation, and Daniel is a fan favorite with local University of Missouri ties. He will be ready if Smith falters. The Chiefs also signed solid tight end, Anthony Fasano from Miami, wide receiver Donnie Avery from Indianapolis, and defensive end Mike DeVito from the Jets. All of these players are quality acquisitions.Kansas City’s new defensive coordinator, Bob Sutton, has to be concerned with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos' passing game. So the Chiefs went after cornerback Dunta Robinson from the Falcons and landed him as well. Then on Thursday, the Chiefs went a step further and signed Miami cornerback Sean Smith to a three-year deal. Smith is a much coveted corner who at 6’3" inches is a difficult matchup and makes life difficult for bigger receivers. He will play the opposite of Pro Bowler Brandon Flowers, while Robinson will play in nickel situations. Is it Christmas in March for Chief’s fans? Yes it appears so.Sure Andy Reid has spent money on many free agents before in Philly. And that didn’t always go so well. However the Chiefs needed some veteran leadership, and it appears owner Clark Hunt is ready to make a play for the AFC west by opening up his wallet. The Chiefs also solidified their top players, by re-signing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, and franchise tagging tackle Branden Albert. The Chiefs also had five Pro Bowlers on a team that won only two games last year.Expect Reid and Dorsey to take super talented left tackle Luke Joeckel with the first pick of the 2013 Draft.Expect the players to respect and eagerly be excited to play for Andy Reid this fall after a total lack of leadership last year.Expect the Chiefs to challenge for the AFC West in 2013.
