Patriots owner Robert Kraft has called drafting Aaron Hernandez a “mistake” by his organization. In the face of a mistake, Kraft also defends his decision by saying he never expected to encounter this situation. According to reports from ESPNBoston.com, Kraft has said he was “duped” by Hernandez. Kraft explained Hernandez as a likable human being, and was always very respectful around the Patriots staff. Hernandez was painting the best picture of himself for his future employer. Nobody could blame him for that. The apparent acting job Hernandez must have done to sway the Patriots to draft him must have been worthy of an Academy award. Kraft later stated he and the Patriots are now looking closer at their procedures and auditing how they do things. Hernandez portrays himself as an angel to the Patriots front office. He was the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing. Obviously they had no idea what goes on behind their own closed doors. You can’t put a private camera on everyone. Not only was Hernandez the most “likable” human being, he was “respectful”, he  even donated $50,000 dollars to a charity run by the Kraft family. On the night of the charity gala, Hernandez went into Kraft’s office teary-eyed and presented the check. Kraft responded by telling Hernandez he already had his extension with the Patriots. Hernandez said he wanted to do it, it made him feel good. “I just think he’s a super player, and really a first-class guy,” Kraft said. “Some people might see all the tattoos on him and think. … Maybe 10 years ago I was in that class, (now) I think ‘Wow, this guy’s a good guy.’ And we made a big commitment to him.”  (Kraft speaking of Hernandez) It’s very hard to imagine the same guy Kraft was gushing about is now sitting in prison, possibly charged with murder. The only thing the Patriots really knew was a few failed drug tests from his time at Florida. Was there risk? Of course. Did they know it would blow up in their face and publicly shame their organization? Probably not.
