By Brian MacPhersonINDIANAPOLIS -- For almost 59 minutes, the Patriots had tried to prevent the New York Giants from scoring. The Giants won the Super Bowl on a touchdown the Patriots gift-wrapped for them.
With a little over a minute to go in the game and the Patriots ahead by a 17-15 score, the Giants drove inside the Patriots' 10-yard line on a series of passes to Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks as well as a bruising run by Ahmad Bradshaw.
All the Giants needed was a chip-shot field goal -- and they were in position to run the clock almost all the way out beforehand. The Patriots instead parted their defensive line at the line of scrimmage and allowed Bradshaw to run to the end zone untouched.
"We were trying to let him score," linebacker Jerod Mayo said.
It was not a tough decision, Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.
"The ball was inside the 10-yard line for a 90 percent field-goal kicker," he said.
