Golden Tate was the best punt returner in the NFL last season, if you believe ProFootballFocus. And a lot of people do. Tate wants to continue to return punts for the Detroit Lions, which might seem like a no-brainer. Only problem: The Lions really like the old guy too. Jeremy Ross was among the team's biggest surprises last season. He went from being cut by the Packers in September, to scoring his first touchdown on Thanksgiving, to returning a punt and kick for a touchdown in December. In the same game. The Lions were in a pinch at punt returner, after Micheal Spurlock proved ineffective and Ryan Broyles ruptured his Achilles tendon. Ross, a midseason acquisition, delivered the goods. And Detroit isn't forgetting that. "When I think of Jeremy, I think of hunger," special teams coordinator John Bonamego said this week. "He was released by Green Bay, and he was very, very hungry to prove himself. When his opportunity came, he was prepared. "It will be exciting this year to see what he can do, after having a full offseason with us, a full training camp, where he can actually integrate him into our system from Day 1." Ross finished last season averaging 16.2 yards on 15 punt returns. That would have led the NFL if he had enough attempts to qualify. He averaged 29.3 yards on 15 kick returns, which would have ranked fourth. Ross' big moment came in Week 14 against Philadelphia, when he became the second Lions player ever to have two returns for a touchdown in the same game. He housed a kick from 98 yards out, then added a 58-yarder on punt return duty.
