Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he remains "cautiously optimistic" Jeff Backus will be back next season.
The veteran left tackle has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed last offseason.
The Lions are also waiting to hear from Hanson on his future. Mayhew expressed the same cautious optimism his kicker would be back in 2013.
Unlike Backus, Hanson, 42, is a free agent, but he admitted he would be willing to sign a one-year deal with the team for less money.

Detroit Lions reloading, not rebuilding
Jim Schwartz told the media the Detroit Lions are not rebuilding. Let’s not get this confused with 2009, the Lions aren’t coming off an 0-16 season. How could you even consider rebuilding when stars like Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh are signed?
“I wouldn’t call it rebuilding,” Schwartz said Thursday. “There’s been a lot of other words used for...

Lions’ GM looking to give Mathew Stafford an extension
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has indicated that they’re going to look to extend quarterback Mathew Stafford’s contract.
Stafford’s contract will reportedly eat up $20 million under the Lions’ cap for next season. If they extend his contract, they’ll create more cap room.
“My thought on that is that we’re going to try to extend him,” said Stafford...
Lions’ Calvin Johnson films ESPN commercial as “Egg-atron” (VIDEO)
Lions wide received Calvin Johnson is used to catching footballs thrown from Matthew Stafford’s Jugs machine with NFL linebackers and safeties looking to knock his block off. Recently, he was Bristol, Connecticut at the ESPN headquarters catching passes thrown from SportsCenter anchor Lindsay Czarniak. But Czarniak was not tossing around the pigskin, but rather a carton...
Detroit Lions are hoping to extend QB Matthew Stafford
The Detroit Lions are starting to purge their roster as the league prepares to roll into the free agency portion of the year. The Lions could use some help via free agency, but they are currently trying to clear up some salary cap issues. Last week, the team parted ways with veteran defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and they are hoping to enter talks with quarterback Matthew Stafford...
Lions GM: I’m willing to add Leaders to the team for 2013
The Detroit Lions suffered through an extremely disappointing 2012 NFL season. After making a playoff appearance in 2011, the Lions went just 4-12 and left many scratching their heads as to why. One of the issues with the team was discipline, and many point the finger at head coach Jim Schwartz for that. But the Lions [...]
Lions GM Martin Mayhew Not Concerned About Losing DE Cliff Avril In Free Agency
The Detroit Lions are running out of bodies at defensive end.
Detroit released defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch earlier this week as a cost-cutting measure. Meanwhile, Lions defensive ends Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson are unrestricted free agents, leaving Detroit with few options at outside pass rusher.
Avril received the team's franchise tag last year, but Lions general...
Lions GM Martin Mayhew Looking To Bring In Players With Leadership Qualities
Detroit's lack of leadership was clearly evident during last year's 4-12 season. While quarterback Matthew Stafford and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh are good players, neither have firmly established themselves as tempo-setters. Detroit lacked a player willing to put the Lions on his back and demand excellence from everyone around him, like Ray Lewis, J.J. Watts, Brian Urlacher...
