Lions QB Matthew Stafford Now Counts For $20.82M Against Salary Cap After Bonus

Matthew Stafford just missed out on his second straight 5,000-yard passing season, but he was good enough this year to trigger a $500,000 escalator in his contract for 2013, according to NFLPA records. Stafford, who the Lions intend to work out a new contract with sometime this spring, now has a cap number of $20.82 million for next season. Stafford, whose deal could top Johnson's, finished second to Drew Brees with 4,967 yards passing, but he threw just 20 touchdowns with 17 interceptions and the Lions slumped to 4-12. Last year, Stafford triggered a $1 million escalator for 2012 by finishing in the top five of several passing categories and a $500,000 escalator for 2013. His base salary for next season is now $12.5 million. Source: Detroit Free Press
