Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has maintained his team has a contingency plan if they cannot rework quarterback Matthew Stafford's contract this offseason.
We may find out what Plan B is very soon.
NFL Network's reporter Albert Breer said he does not expect Stafford to have a new deal anytime soon, which shows how far apart both sides currently are in negotiations.
Breer tweeted: "On big QB cap #'s left - Been told Peyton & Rivers won't be restructured. With Stafford, it'd only be thru a new deal. That won't come soon."
Stafford's contract does not expire until after the 2015 season and he's slated to earn $12 million in 2013 (salary cap hit is $20.3 million), $11 million in 2014 ($19.3 million salary cap hit) and $15 million in 2015 ($17.7 million salary cap number). While restructuring would help Detroit compete in free agency, there is no sense of urgency on Stafford's end from a business perspective.

Detroit Lions 2013 Offseason Preview
A sneaky, early round pick in my Fantasy Football league in 2011 was the Detroit Lions defense/special teams. Thankfully, I’m a complete nut and either manage or am a part of at least three Fantasy leagues every year. And I had the smarts and the homerism to pick...
