The New York Football Giants visited the White House today to receive congratulations from President Obama. The champions presented the President with a blue number 44 jersey and a signed football. Obama responded by noting that the Giants were a special team because of where they ended up. Then he embarrassed football fans everywhere by referring to punter Steve Weatherford as "that cut kicker...man you are ripped!"

All in all, it was a great tribute to a great team. And it allows us here to gloat a little. I know I'm supposed to be professional and all, but something occurred to me today as I was reading the updates on the Giants' White House trip. In 2009, Rex Ryan came to the New York Jets vowing, "We will visit President Obama as Super Bowl champions." Quickly cutting off any sarcasm from yours truly, he finished, "In his FIRST term." Whether or not Obama wins a second term in November, Ryan has been exposed as all-talk...again. Next year, if it's Obama still at the White House, it will no longer be his first term. The Jets will not be visiting the Obama White House in his first term.

What were the Jets doing today? They were doing what everyone else was: hosting OTA's. When Rex Ryan was asked how things were going, he boasted that more Jets players were attending the OTA's than any other team in the League. "We're the OTA champions," he declared. That's right. That's what he said. Now rumor has it he was responding to critical comments from one of the Miami Dolphins, but even so, what head coach, unless he's really grasping, uses a phrase like, "OTA Champions"?! There's no such thing, of course. When pressed with what he meant, Ryan retreated to praising his as-yet untested defense: "They're going to be really special." Funny, but isn't that what he's been saying for four years now?

Ryan also recently was quoted as saying, "We want to be like the Giants." You mean win something other than an unofficial OTA competition? A division? A conference? A Super Bowl? Yeah, that's what I thought.
