Welcome to our Wednesday 12th man mailbag. This week we’re talking the Seahawks draft strategy, and address the rumors regarding Sidney Rice and Red Bryant being cut. Bjorn from Seattle: Should the Seahawks have a specific role in mind or play it by ear with their first pick? My guess is that John Schneider and Pete Carroll will play it both ways there. I’m certain that they have a plan in mind for their number one pick, but if circumstances change they will have a backup plan, and a backup plan for the backup plan. If it’s me I pick the best offensive lineman that’s available when the 32nd pick comes around, but I can also see them going with a big receiver as well. The good news is that according to most folks in the know, this is one of the deepest NFL drafts in about 30 years, so even if the Seahawks can’t get their first or second or third man, there’s still a lot of skill to go around. Since the draft is so deep though I can see Schneider going with the old “take the best player available” route, regardless of position, excluding quarterback and running back. Even if the guy doesn’t fit the scheme, they can use that pick as leverage to get who they really want later on. Michael G. from Seattle: Why all the “seahawks set to cut” rumors but no action? Conspiracy theorists ask who benefits from such rumors? Good question there. In general I’ve tried to avoid posting articles on so and so is supposed to be cut, with the exception of Sidney Rice because that’s been a pretty obvious choice to me for several months. I’m sure that both Rice and Red Bryant will be released by the team but I’ve decided to hold off on posting the news until it’s actually confirmed by the Seahawks front office. As far as why they’re holding off, your guess is as good as mine. The team is probably in negotiation with a dozen players on their roster who they want to bring back in 2014. That’s a lot of moving parts and they all have to fit together. For example, the ‘Hawks might wait until they have a commitment from Michael Bennett before they officially let Bryant go, as jumping the gun there might leave them a man short on the D line, but really who knows? As far as the rumors go, I have an all-encompassing theory to address anything ridiculous in this world. I blame the media. I guess I can’t exclude myself from that heinous pack of hyenas anymore, but my presence is not going to change the nature of the game. Today’s media thrives on peddling speculation and lies. Unfounded rumors, wild exaggerations, misleading headlines, desperate link baiting, it’s all a part of the circus. It is what it is and it’s not going to change any time soon. This may just be a blog but I’m not going to get caught reporting that Dewey won the Presidency prematurely. It’s best just to ignore the rumor mongering until the team says it’s so.
