Usually I like to stick to my own thoughts and insight without having to directly address crap put out by the media talking heads here in Chicago, but in the case of Mike Mulligan's article I have to respond.

In Mulligan's article he simply asserts that the Bears' 53-man roster is flawed from top to bottom full of has been players or never will be players or just flat out bad players.   Mulligan couldn't be any more wrong in his assertion, and he needs to take his Jerry Angelo Chicago Bears hating blinders off and CTFD.

The flaw in the Bears as it is with most teams is at the backup quarterback position and a bit in the coaching staff.   Much like the Colts are a annual playoff team when Peyton Manning is behind center, much like the Lions last year and this year and even the almighty Packers last year and this year, the margin for error is slim.

The Packers would not be competing for the perfect season without Aaron Rodgers, not with the worst pass defense in the NFL.   The Packers without Rodgers lost two straight games that nearly kept them from the playoffs last year.  If Rodgers goes down at any point during the playoffs for one game, the Packers are DONE.

Same with the Lions who lost Stafford last season, and have had to count on Stafford's early season heroics in the second half in order to maintain their slight edge for the playoffs.   The Lions had two major early comeback wins over the Cowboys and Vikings, games they should have lost which would easily put them out of the playoff hunt with seven losses.  Instead they received some luck and are still in the playoff hunt.

The Bears are in the same boat, with Caleb Hanie that the Packers and Lions would be in with their backup QBs.  Hanie is a flawed QB, and it's not surprising because QBs who can play in the NFL are such a hot commodity that backup QBs are traded in the off-season nearly immediately and with a high value in return.

Yes I was wrong to assert that the Bears would be just fine with Caleb Hanie.  That was my call, Hanie would be fine and the Bears would still be in the playoffs.  Instead the razor's edge sliced open the Bears the last three games with some help along the way fluke hail mary touchdown, fluke play from Marion Barber and just downright bad play from Caleb Hanie against the Raiders.

The Bears would be sitting at 10-3 with Jay Cutler, with injuries to Forte and two starters on the offensive line meaning the roster would be just fine thank you.   As it is overcoming the injuries the Bears have has been remarkable enough, especially considering how bad the starting offensive line was supposed to be.

So yes the Bears have been snake bitten in three straight weeks, but their anti-venom has been on the bench with a thumb injury.   The Bears experienced good fortune last year, and this year they didn't get the same fortune in return.  That's not a flawed roster, that's a sure sign of the competitive balance that is the NFL.
