Set to become a premier prospect on the free agent circuit, there’s no question Mario Williams is about to get the big bucks.

Whether it’s from the Texans, or another team that attempts to pry him away, Super Mario will have a long list of suitors willing to fork over the cash.

Might the Pats be amongst that list?

As improbable as it sounds, considering their approach to the game, it’s a scenario that shouldn’t be discounted.

On Sunday, Pro Football Weekly speculated that the Patriots “could make a run at” Williams if indeed the 27-year-old hits the open market.

Of course, there’s plenty of reason to believe this is nothing more than early offseason conjecture.

In Bill Belichick’s tenure, the team has traditionally shied away from making a big splash in free agency, opting instead to build through the draft.

This year, however, they could look to buck that trend.

You know Belichick, ever the perfectionist, is still pulling his hair out after the Super Bowl loss to the Giants, when Eli Manning and Co. continually torched his 31st-ranked defense.

What better way to upgrade a lackluster squad than with a two-time All-Pro defensive stud who’s still in his prime?
