Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Chiefs are now expected to release QB Matt Cassel in the near future. Goes without saying but Chiefs now expected to release QB Matt Cassel, who will have a market for his services. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 27, 2013 Now that a trade has been completed for QB Alex Smith,  it’s all but certain that Cassel will be cut loose. Cassel, 30, lost his starting job this season after he struggled mightily with turnovers in 2012. He has a $7.5 million base salary in 2013, which is way too much for a backup quarterback at this point. Schefter mentioned on this morning’s SportsCenter that there’s a chance that Cassel could make his way to Arizona next season. Other rumors have suggested that the Patriots could be another option.
