Quarterback Matt Flynn was released by the Oakland Raiders on Monday, ending his tumultuous few months with the team. Now that he is a free agent, many expected his old squad to come calling to bring him on as a backup. But according to reports, we shouldn’t expect the Green Bay Packers to have a reunion with Flynn. The great Rob Demovsky of ESPN claims the Packers have completely downplayed any talk of bringing Flynn back to Titletown. Head coach Mike McCarthy claims he is happy with the team’s quarterback situation behind starter Aaron Rodgers, as Seneca Wallace has apparently made a solid impression on the team. I actually made a call to a Packers source and was told that the team would definitely consider bringing Flynn back. But if Demovsky says it won’t happen, I believe him since he’s one of the best beat writers in the country and he’s been covering the Packers for years. Flynn was a well-regarded backup for the Packers from 2008-2011 after the team selected him in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He only started twice for Green Bay but impressed both times. His most memorable game came in the regular season finale of the 2011 season when he threw for a team-record 480 yards and six touchdowns against the Detroit Lions. That offseason he signed a three-year, $26 million free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks, but was beaten out for the starting quarterback job by rookie Russell Wilson. He spent the season as the team’s backup, before being traded to the Raiders in April for a fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Flynn, he was beaten out by Terrelle Pryor for the Raiders starting job in the preseason. This past week he dropped to third on the depth chart behind Pryor and undrafted rookie Matt McGloin. Oakland then released him, despite the fact that he is owed $6.5 million for the rest of the season. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers to eventually bring Flynn back. But right now they claim they have no interest in doing so.
