Matt Light was always a popular teammate during his tenure with the New England Patriots. When he decided to hang up his cleats after the 2011-2012 season, it was clear he would be sorely missed.

One of his former teammates may be seeing much more of him, as an interview with Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News revealed that Light, like former teammate Tedy Bruschi before him, is aiming for a job on ESPN following his retirement.

“I’m working with ESPN right now trying to finalize a contract,” Light said. “I want to see how that goes. Football has been a big part of my life – for the majority of my life – and the TV stuff would help me keep one foot in the door of that world and have some fun with it, too.”

Often lost in their public perception as gentle giants is the fact that offensive lineman are often the smartest men on the field and usually score higher on average as a group than even quarterbacks on the Wonderlic Test. Light was at times dominant at his position, and would no doubt bring a bevy of knowledge to the broadcast booth or newsrooms of ESPN.

Indeed, with the Patriots still occupying one of the center positions in the National Football League solar system, Matt will be able to -pardon the pun- shed some light on one of the most newsworthy teams and quarterbacks in the league.

Archdeacon's article also highlights all of the great things Light does in the name of charity with his Light Foundation. His endeavors often involve children, and from essay contests with various prizes to scholarships, he is an athlete that lives up to his potential as a role model.

Light's pride and joy is Camp Vohokase, where he holds an "outdoor leadership camp for at-risk teenagers from around (Darke) county," writes Archdeacon.

One of this year's campers, Ellijah McLean perfectly described the wonderful things Light does when he said, “I knew he was a lineman who played for the Patriots, but I didn’t know he’d be so funny and outgoing. He’s a great guy – he really cares about us. He’s not one of those pro basketball and football players you see who does some kind of community thing just to look good, but who’s never really there once the cameras are gone."

A man like that is easy to root for. Best of luck from Patriot nation, Matt Light, we know you'll be just as great in front of the cameras as you are when they are gone.
