Casey Matthews has not been a fan favorite since his arrival in Philadelphia.

After being named the starter at middle linebacker during training camp, Matthews caught the wrath of the fans who blamed him for the defensive struggles earlier on.

While some of that criticism was fair, the fact is that Matthews was not completely to blame for the defensive let downs. But that did not stop Matthews from speaking out about the fans to Tim McManus of PhillySportsDaily.com

"I don’t think anyone will ever understand these fans," said Matthews. "When we win they love you but when we lose it gets rough. That’s just how it is here. It’s like that in some other places, but not to this extent."

Perhaps realizing what he said was going to bring even more down on him from the fans, Matthews tweeted an apology today.

Off the field, this represents the first slip up by Matthews since his arrival. During the beginning of the season Matthews stood tall and answered all of the questions thrown his way. It would have been easy for him to speak out then, but he did not, and should be commended for it.

However, to speak out now was probably not the best move by Matthews. The fans are already starting to turn on this team, and having a player that they view for part of the reason this season has gone poorly tell them that they are not good fans will not help.

Matthews knows better than to say something like that, as he comes from a family that has dealt with the pressures of being in the NFL.

As for how he can get them to stop booing?

"Hey, just win and keep them happy" said Matthews.
