Jacksonville Jaguars’ running back Maurice Jones-Drew recently made news when he said a former teammate of his almost missed a block for him because the two were playing each other that week in fantasy football. Not hearing the interview in context, many media outlets blew the quotes up and made it much more than the joke he intended it to be. Here’s what Jones-Drew posted on twitter to clarify. Stop the madness!! Listen to the broadcast…it was a JOKE people…made during the Sirius fantasy draft. #commonsencejournalism! — Maurice Jones-Drew (@Jones_Drew32) July 18, 2013 I know people in the past have admitted to missing blocks but it’s still surprising people thought Jones-Drew was serious considering the story itself. Here’s Jones-Drew’s story: Greg Jones — see he’s not on the team anymore — perfect example: I was playing against him [in fantasy]. And we have our equipment guys keep us up on [the fantasy scores] during games. You know who you have and you see when you’re not on the field obviously but … I think if I scored, I was going to [beat Jones]. “We got onto the 1-yard line, and they were like, ‘We better call this run play.’ I’m like, ‘Greg, don’t do it.’ And he looked at me and he winked. And I was like ‘Greg.’ It’s not time to play. This is bigger than [winning in fantasy]. Let’s not do this.” Asked what the wink meant, MJD answered, “[Jones] wasn’t going to block the guy!” The lesson here is one that anyone on twitter and social media already knows; it’s hard to convey humor and sarcasm through written words. 2013 Jacksonville Jaguars position battles

The phrase "open competition" flowed freely from the lips of coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell during their first few months in charge of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
