While officials with the St. Augustine police department have publicly stated they are wrapping up their investigation in the nightclub incident allegedly involving Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Maurice Jones-Drew, they are taking their time with the case so it is properly handled by authorities.I applaud this effort. In a case like this, no stone should be left unturned. And as a matter in this case, there are four sides that need to be addressed, legally and with the NFL franchise.Making a hasty decision in the case could prove costly for all those involved.A Florida Times-Union report on Jacksonville.com states that, “St. Augustine Police spokesman Mark Samson said the department is trying to schedule an interview with Jones-Drew before forwarding the case to the state attorney. If that can’t be done soon, he said, the report will likely go to State Attorney R.J. Larizza without an interview.”Larizza will make the decision on whether to charge Jones-Drew with a crime.Police are reviewing a videotape of the incident. Samson said police have been working to enhance the video to get a better sense of what happened.Police have declined to release a copy of the video because it’s part of an ongoing investigation, which is legal under the state’s public records laws.Jones-Drew has maintained his innocence throughout the media storm of this event, stating he did not in any way harm nightclub security guard Kasim Howard, who alleged with hit in the jaw by Jones-Drew during an altercation with one of Jones-Drew’s friends. The story first broke when it was alleged that the friend of the football player was being inappropriate with a female in the club, at which time Howard told the male to stop, the two got into an altercation, leading to him being placed in a headlock by Howard. At that time, Jones-Drew came to the aid of his friend and supposedly hit Howard, knocking him unconscious and causing damage to the security guard’s jaw.No charges have been filed as of yet. The Times-Union article goes on to state that attorney Gregory Anderson, who represents the Conch House, where the alleged incident took place in St. Augustine on May 26, said in a news release the security video captures Jones-Drew rapidly approaching Howard from the back-left side and sucker punching him in the jaw.Patrick Canan, who has been retained as Howard’s attorney, last week said the videotape clearly shows his client being hit in the face. The question of whether the police will get to interview Jones-Drew is a sticking point because of location. He is currently in Miami working with trainers to rehabilitate his foot that required surgery in the offseason. There was a report that Jones-Drew was in Jacksonville over the weekend, but there is no word if a meeting was set up by law enforcement officials or if the two sides spoke about meeting.Jones-Drew is in the final year of his contract with the Jaguars. Last season he held out for 38 days during training camp and was injured in the sixth game of the season. Although he was present for the team’s first set of OTAs two weeks ago, he is not present now for team practice.Jaguars officials have not truly commented on the situation as of yet, other than team head coach Gus Bradley publicly stating he is happy with the fact Jones-Drew has been in communication with the team throughout the entire incident.“I am not naive. Situations do come up. I’ve asked him to communicate with us. He’s done that."
