After watching the press conference Maurice Jones-Drew had with the media on Monday for the second time, maybe I have been a bit harsh on the Jaguars’ star running back. Maybe I have been too quick to judge and too quick to not see fact from fiction.Maybe there is someone, no matter which side of this “alleged” battery case on, who is not seeking veritas (truth) and the media and the public are being fed a load of cow chips.Whatever the situation is, Jones-Drew sat at the press conference on Monday and did exactly what he wanted to do -- talk about football. And after listening to what he had to say, listening to the media continually pepper him with questions and tried to break the runner’s spirit every once in a while, I think the best thing MJD can do now is talk about football. And nothing else.Admittedly, it is hard to be a human, an athlete and a role model. All three should be one in the same and all three are significantly different from one another. Jones-Drew only wanted to talk about being an athlete on Monday. Whether he has lost points with the community or the media over the recent events involving the nightclub “incident” that allegedly left a security guard injured was small fodder and something Jones-Drew said he could not talk about because it was an ongoing investigation.Currently, the St. Johns County State Attorney’s Office has the case and will decide to press charges if they find Jones-Drew was involved in the “battery” he is being investigated for.Jones-Drew showed support for his team and his franchise when he spoke during the press conference. He said he lost some weight and was running and doing things to get himself ready for the upcoming season. That should make everyone in the Jaguars organization happy. It should put a smile on the face of head coach Gus Bradley and the owner of the team, Shad Khan. When it comes right down to it, there is nothing the organization nor Jones-Drew can do concerning the off-field issues. The main focus of the team should be with minicamp and preparation for training camp and the preseason. Everything is minutiae. If Jones-Drew, who showed focus in the press room, can channel his inner self, which usually means he plays and practices with heart and a chip on his shoulder, there is no reason to believe he will be focusing on anything else but the 2013 season and his recovery from his foot injury from 2012. That is a good thing for the Jaguars and their hope of a better season. That means it’s a bad thing for the opposition who will try to prove Jones-Drew is not the back he once was.
