To preface this article I have to say that I am a Dallas Cowboys’ fan who loves animals…so yeah; Michael Vick doesn’t really stand much of a chance here does he? But I promise, this just means I’ll have to work that much harder to make sure no one accuses me of being bias an any way – I’m going to stick to the cold hard facts  and avoid letting my personal feelings for this awful human being affect my opinion – alright, that was the one and only shot I’ll take. But really, who is Michael Vick? Is he the player from 2010 who was one of the best in the game, or is he the 2011 version of Michael Vick who was an injury and a turnover waiting to happen?

Michael Vick Is Overrated…And Here’s Why

To borrow a line from Kramer, “You know what they say, ‘you don’t sell the steak, you sell the sizzle’.” Essentially, this sums up the career of one Michael Laveranues Vick – his middle name isn’t really Laveranues, I just thought I needed a little extra gravitas there.

We have all seen the highlight reel ankle-breaking scrambles and the effortless 70 yard bombs with a mere flick of his wrist, but where has that talent gotten him? Well, it has gotten him two different $100 million contracts, that is what it has gotten him. The real question should be; what has that money bought in the way of production for the team shelling out all that dough?

Let’s try the eye test. I will but put up the average season stats of two players, one is Michael Vick and the other is Alex Smith, see if you can tell which average stat-line belongs to which player.

YDS                TDs         INTs       Comp %        FUM        QB Rating

Player 1:                     2,520                15           10           55.8                 7                   80.0

Player 2:                     2,857                15           13           58.0                 7                   75.9

Given up yet? If you guessed that Player 1 was Michael Vick, then give yourself a prize, because you have just won the first annual “Name That Terrible Career Stat-Line” contest. The fact that those two players have eerily similar career numbers should be the only proof anyone needs to call Vick overrated. But to truly understand the level of someone’s over-inflated value, you have to go by the first rule of crime-solving – follow the money.

According to Forbes Magazine, Michael Vick is the fourth highest paid player in the entire National Football League at $15.9 million for the 2011 season. In case you were wondering, Aaron Rodgers only makes a little north of $11 million.  Clearly Michael Vick is overpaid, but does that automatically make him overrated? Yes, yes it does.

For his career, Michael Vick is 51-44-1 as a quarterback (excluding the 2009 season when he came off the bench for a play here and there). We should probably also mention that over the course of his nine year career, Vick has only been able to play a full 16-game schedule one time, in 2006 when the Atlanta Falcons went 7-9 and missed the playoffs. Speaking of which, Vick also has a career mark of 2-3 in the playoffs.

There is no question Michael Vick is one of the best physically gifted athletes to ever play the game of football. His speed, his arm-strength, those are things in which he got freakishly good God-given abilities;  but so far he has not translated those skills on the field consistently enough, or to the level that he should to justify the money he makes and the hype that surrounds him.

For a little over half a season in 2010, he looked as if he might turn a corner and become the player everyone had hoped, but alas, in 2011 Vick has returned to his standard mercurial self. He is now back to being the player whose completion percentage falls below 60, whose TDs don’t rise above the INTs and whose interceptions are a higher number than his games played.

For all the underwhelming stats Vick has put up, coupled with the fact he his paid like a top-tier NFL quarterback, makes Michael Vick worthy of a first-class “Most Overrated” Certification.
