FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith announced on Monday that tests he underwent on Friday as follow-ups to his hospitalization on Dec. 11 in Charlotte were not related to his heart. Asked what the issue was, Smith elected not to reveal the problem. Guys, this is definitely going to be the last time that I address it, Smith said. I want to be as transparent as I can be and, as was reported, I did have a follow-up appointment and follow-up testing on Friday. The follow-up appointment revealed the cause of the problem that I was having in Charlotte and I want to tell you that its not my heart, OK, my heart is fine. I am fine. The doctors, though, have devised a medical plan for me to deal with the issues and I can assure you again, guys, its not my heart. I am fine and I want to talk about our football team. Smith said the medical plan would not affect how he coaches the team. No, it will not be anything that will affect how I coach the team in terms of that, he said. I just want it to come to a conclusion and, as I mentioned, that was something -- the testing and such -- that took place on Friday. Weve got an idea or weve got a way to deal with it. Guys have put together a plan and well move forward with that. The Falcons clinched their fourth consecutive winning season on Thursday with their 41-14 win over Jacksonville in Smiths four seasons as head coach. Prior to his arrival, the franchise, which began playing in 1966, had never posted back-to-back winning seasons. At 9-5, the Falcons are currently fifth in the NFC standings and are on pace for the third playoff berth in Smiths tenure. Smith underwent the testing at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Following the Falcons 31-23 victory over the Panthers on Dec. 11, he fell ill on the team charter plane and had to be hospitalized. He returned to Atlanta in the early morning hours of Dec. 12. The team released very little information as to the cause of Smiths health issue other than general manager Thomas Dimitroff telling NBC that Smith did not suffer a heart attack.
