The Minnesota Vikings passed another hurdle early this morning when the Minnesota State Senate passed their version of the Vikings Stadium bill. Now that the bill has passed both the House and the Senate, the next step is for a conference committee to convene to compile the two versions of the bill into a final version for vote by both the House and Senate floors.

The biggest challenges ahead are the differences between the original agreement between the Vikings and the State and Local entities, and the differences between the House and Senate bills.

The Vikings originally agreed to contribute $427 million toward the upfront costs of the stadium and the state contribution of $389 being paid for by electronic pull tabs and other charitable gambling options. The original agreement allowed the Vikings to keep Personal Seat Licenses (PSL's) and other revenue streams that would allow the team to be competitive financially with other teams around the league.

The MN House bill upped the Vikings contribution to $532 million, which the Vikings have already stated that this is an unacceptable proposal, while the Senate version of the bill ups the contribution to $452 million. The conference committee will have a herculean task over the next day or two to develop a final bill that has any chance of passing both the House and Senate and that will be agreeable to the Vikings.

There is still plenty of work to do in the legislature before a final bill will be presented for an up or down vote, and be presented to the MN Governor Mark Dayton.
