What happens when you mix a thirsty group of cowboys, a bus full of showgirls, maniacal Mad Max characters and an Arab walking camels through a desert?

The folks at Coca-Cola call it a commercial. Arab-American groups, however, call it racist, according to NBCNews.com.

Abed Ayoub, director of legal and policy affairs of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), is unhappy with this particular multimillion-dollar Super Bowl ad, asking: ”What message is Coke sending with this?

“By not including the Arab in the race, it is clear that the Arab is held to a different standard when compared to the other characters in the commercial,” he says.

The ADC, which made headlines back in 1992 when it complained that lyrics in the animated film Aladdin were racist, isn’t alone.

“The Coke commercial for the Super Bowl is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish ‘Camel Jockeys,’ and they have no chance to win in the world,” Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, said in an email to NBCNews.com.

CBS, which is airing the Super Bowl on Sunday, declined to comment on situation.

Coca-Cola spokeswoman Lauren Thompson emailed NBCNews.com, explaining that “Coca-Cola is an inclusive brand enjoyed by all demographics. We illustrate our core values, from fun and refreshment to happiness, inspiration and optimism across all of our marketing communications.”

  • BS on the racist Arabs
I think the Camel wont run because it's buthurt from being an Arab sex object
  • The ad is fine. You are disgusting.
  • in the words of "Larry the Cable Guy,I don't care who you are,but that was funny"
  • Why are camels called the ships of the desert?
  • Screw the arabs!
  • I quess the truth heards, i wonder if beheading christians because they are lower than they is not.
  • Hey, Wardo, your comments would have much mnore credibility if you knew the difference between "hurts" and "heards."
  • Do you permission from your man to comment on this?
  • They have to be kidding right? How dumb can you be? The Camel will take a shortcut without needing any water while the bus and other vehicles run out of gas or over heat and the horses collapse with exhaustion. The Arab gets the COKE! So what's the fuss all about?????
  • Exactly! People can be morons no matter if they were born in the Middle East or in Middle America!
  • Too easy.
  • That's exactly my thoughts. Of course the Bedouin will win! And, have you ever seen a camel run? They can put up pretty good pace.

I'm sure Coke thought it was funny and, to a certain extent, it is, certainly. But I can also see where some overly sensitive people might see a slight in the presentation. Twenty years ago, everybody would be rolling at the humor but twenty years ago was before 9/11 and Anglos began looking at everybody who 'might' look like they 'might be' Arabic as a terrorist. This created a certain sense of defensiveness in the Arab-American comunity, and understandably so. I mean, how would you feel if, based on your appearance and/or ethnicity people automatically judged you to be deficient in some way? Oh, wait! If you are Black, you already know. And if you are Asian ... or gay ... or ... Gee. I guess we've really gotten good at being condescending and judgmental.
Ah, well. Thanks to 'political correctness' everybody gets to be offended by something someone says about something.
Hey! I've got an idea! Let's just stop checking to see how 'the other guy' measures up and start worrying more abour our own measure.
  • Please get serious! from now on, just shw the logo of the company for 30 seconds so that no one is offended...oops wait the logo is red and whit, what does Coke have against the color green, or for that matter any other color. they should be forced to change their logo into a rainbow to avoid offending any color
  • this is not being racist.for the main thing Coke isn't a racist company.they have more ethnic groups than anyone else regardless of origin. If all these idiots think a goofy commerical is racist. Then they need to go get a life and quit being so freaking money hungry.
  • Are you saying that Coke is GAY?
  • racist my ass, if they were mating with the camels and borehogging young boys, that would be racist! true but racist.
the black cloud of islam raises its hideous head again.
  • Hey ****, do you really think this kind of comment helps anything other than to fuel your own hostility?
  • MrsMiddleEast,

If the U.S. can stop buying your oil in a few years, can you leave our western culture alone? If need be move your sorry torso back to the Mid-East where you can once again be treated like a second rate citizen. We would all appreciate it. Thanks!
  • it portrays "Arabs as backward and foolish", sounds to me like it's spot on.
  • I guess they need to ask the U.S. for more money to fund their highway system so they dont need to ride a stubborn camel so they will not be portrayed as dipchits
  • those "dipchits" hold about 58 billion of our national debt. explain how they would borrow money from the U.S.?
  • The people with the problem are calling themselves Arab-American? If this is the case, as an American you would understand that the commercial is a parody of American popculture. All of the characters are representing movies that have been very popular here in the US (and in much of the rest of the word). It is diffucult if you are from another culture and living in one that you are not familar with to understand the humor in many things. If you choose to live within another culture it is your resposibility to accept or at least learn about your new homes culture. It is not your new homes responsibility to change so you feel like you are back home. You chose to live in the US.
  • You don't know how much resentment they confront every day. It makes them extra sensitive to criticism. Let's not be so hateful - they're allowed to be American and not abandon their heritage, and they shouldn't feel despised just because they belng to a group that includes some rotters. Do you approve of everything that every American does?
  • YUP.
    Git-R-Dun!
  • Last I knew this is, or was America. If it offends them then get out of America, and take that rag headed islamic religion with you as well!! And thats all I'm saying..
  • I think flying airplanes into buildings and then replacing the building with a mosque is racist. But this is my home...what the hell does it matter what I think?
  • This is not racist. People dont know what the definition of racist is....I like the commercial and they should keep it.!!!!!
  • Also, having a party to celebrate 9/11 is racist. What say you?
  • If anything, it's guilty of sexism. Clearly the women have the upper hand against the bumbling incompetent men.
  • I totally agree with Weekend - the Arabs will win because the camels DON'T need to stop for water and can walk miles whereas the vehicles will breakdown due to sand, the horses will drop from thirst. Mr. Weekend you got it right on the money.
  • Competely agree with you!

  • You really cannot be serious.
  • You aren't helping anything with comments like this. This is nonsense.
  • durp dee durp
  • not only do whites make it as pedos, but so do the rest of the world.example the 10 yr old S.American girl who just gave birth and was her dad that knocked her up.so it's not just whites that are sick.
  • Tool.
  • You're a real d-bag davis70. Back to your cave.
  • Someone needs to learn what words mean:

ra-cism (rasizm)n. 1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. 2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.--rac'ist adj. n.

    race (ras)
Biology. A population of organisms differing from others of the same species in the frequency of hereditary traits; a subspecies. A breed or strain, as of domestic animals.

Under the definition, Arabs do not qualify as a race.
  • Good Point...
  • Finally someone gives the correct definition of racism. The word is thrown around so much and is always confused with bigotry. Thx SourceOfTruth.

    BTW the commercial is neither.
  • The only true smart one turns out to be the camel. It knew it was a billboard and nothing to get excited about.
  • What a load of BS why becuase the Camel jockey didnt win it is racist. Well at least they didnt kill his camel and burn his tent
  • "Camel jockey?" Really? You are so enlightened!
  • I am so tired of all of this racial BS. And all of the cultural sniveling.
I suppose I should start saying that I am Sicilian-American and claim minority status. I am sure that there are less Sicilian decendants than the rest. Should I complain about the Chef Boyardee commercials?
What is wrong with being proud of your heritage but true to the USA.
Americans are of many cultures and they should all be portrayed.
  • Exactly!
  • vjmhunt....thank you. IMO people make to much of little stuff and scream racism. I'm half cherokee indian and proud of my heritage. But i don't take offense at someone using my heritage in a way not meant as "racist" or whatever. There was a lot of flack over the victoria's secret fasion show that had a model dressed as "a native american" to me it was a beautiful woman that happened to be wearing feathers. I thought the commercial was cute. It's a shame when narrow minded bigots make something out of nothing.
To those who used the "rag head" "camel jockey" and such need to grow up! I don't harbor any hate or predjudice at the for lack of a better term middle eastern people they like us "americans" are all different people. I served in desert storm, lost some friends there. Lost some more the second time around. But I don't hate the Iraqi people for what some of them did. I lost friends in afganistan (sp?) but don't hate the afgani people. We all need to lighten up and see the humor as it was meant to be.
  • There is absolutely nothing racist about this ad. Actually, I'm rooting for the Arab because he's the only with half a brain in the race. Plus, I'm old and think the camel is cute. Anyone who thinks this ad is racist knows nothing about racists except themselves. I've been on the receiving end of racism and our family is quite diverse now, so I'm very sensative to racism when it really rears it's ugly head. This ain't it.
  • How right you are!
  • In this stupidly PC world you can't sneeze without "offending" someone. Ridiculous.
  • From now on there can be no people in advertisements.
  • then wouldn't that be discriminating against the human race? hehe
  • I saw this commerical and it makes no since to me at all, I think for what they will pay to show it during the big game isn't worth it, but it's there big bucks not mine for I don't like coke to begin with..Give me a Pepsi Please..
  • No, Hell no it's not racist, the 1st seen was setting up the commercial as in the desert. If anything the Arab was watching the fools race.. Unless Arabs have never been portrayed as being from the desert.

Groups like this pitch a bitch to here themselves.. Don't bow to this BS.
  • The whole "racist" argument here is beyond stupid. These are all portraying characters, not nationalities or ethnic groups. By Siddiqui's sterling logic, the commercial is also portraying women as showgirl sex objects who travel in packs, and men as whooping cowboys and knuckle dragging post-apocalyptic freaks. The only thing that actually looked like it might BELONG in the desert as portrayed were - the arab and his camels! You wouldn't expect to see cowboys, showgirls in a bus, or the guys on motorcycles. Note that THEY were the only ones making fools of themselves in pursuit of the Coke - NOT the arab! These fools should be happy that the arab was the only one that was portrayed in a dignified or traditional way. The perpetually offended need to be ignored.
  • Thank you for an intelligent response.
  • Where are the Africans, the Indians, the Eskimos, the Asians? Does that mean these people are too dumb to run this race, this is dumb, it is a Ad about some sexy women, and some dirty bikers and Cowboys and whoever chasing after a Coke? Big deal? Why not have everybody in the world chasing after a coke? No one really got the coke did they?
  • and what does this has to do with arabs anyway just cause its in the dessert and have camels doesnt mean anything so stupid
  • no matter how you see it. its a buch of bull. get a life
  • Seriously, people have issues with a commercial??? Get a freakin' life it's at most 60 seconds of tv when people will be going for chips or beer or something. There isn't anything wrong with the commercial it's people who are way too sensitive. Grow up and grow a set and get over it!
  • The word "racist" has been bantered around so much lately that it has lost any significance. There was a time that if something was labeled racist, it would have indeed been subject to scrutiny, and deservedly so...but anymore when something or someone is called "racist" the one labeling it as such is simply a joke, and deserves no credence!!!
  • Coca Cola,PLease DO NOT apologize.
  • WOW!!! What idiot thinks this is racist? Whoever he/she or they are should never be allowed to voice their whinny opinion again. I am an American cowboy and I am not upset that we were depicted as womenising people who would run a horse through the dessert to grab a coke instead of whiskey. Sound stupid? Yep, just like the fools who think this ws racist? Leave it on Coke!!
  • Cowboy, did I hear you right? You're an American who wants to tell other Americans they're not allowed to voice their opinions? How American is that?
  • I swa nothing wrong with the commerical.

But on flip side the Islamic's have been slowly infiltrating this country and it has been so subtle that there is no way of really knowing the full extent of their influence.

Though we may find out sooner than we suspect if this commerical is scrapped.
  • Rght. because they aren't involved in any violence and since camels actually are known to be better at long distance in the desert, they have no chance and coke is "racist".
  • I can see there is no humor in the the ARAB world, maybe it would be best no one talks about them. Then the rest of the world will forget that thy are around. Hey lighten up Mr ARAB there are others in the ad, I did not read that they where protesting there roll in ad.
  • Big Brain? Look up the words "where", "were", "role" and "roll." It might help to exercise your big brain from time to time.
  • Jeez another useless comment from you again. Spelling errors are commonplace, big deal? I noticed you replied to superjeff by typing, "did I hear you right?" You must have great hearing.
  • I married a man who was born in Tehran, and although Persians and Arabs see themselves as distinctly different groups, most of the world lumps them together. So, I feel somewhat qualified as an insider on this issue.

This ad does not offend me as being anti-Middle-East any more than it offends me as a woman. Granted, the women driving the pink bus are better looking than the guy on the camel, but I don't think these characters are a particularly flattering portrayal of women, either. In fact, is anyone in this ad supposed to be role model? No! They are supposed to be entertaining!

By the way, I think the guy on the camel is the only one who has a chance to make it through 50 miles of desert to win the bottle of Coke. The bus will run out of gas, so will the motorcycle, and the cowboys and their horses will languish of thirst. Maybe the guy on the camel will get the Coca Cola and bring it back to the others to save them from perishing in the desert. Wouldn't that be a fabulous way for Coke to show the critics what great folks they are?
  • I think these women are suppose to be showgirls from Las Vegas or a circus or something; hence the tour bus. Not everyone can be an intellectual, don't be so hard on them ;)
  • هذه ليست تجارية جيدة
  • @#$&^%$(*&*(
    (fu_K Off)
  • This is AMERICA not ARABIA. If you don't like our commerciala Go home.
  • Not very helpful DopeyGillis.
  • Leave it to the "camel jockeys" to think it is a racist commercial!!!!!
  • "camel jockeys" ... Where on Earth would these dummies get the idea that people in this country are prejudiced and biased against them?
  • The Coke commercial for the Super Bowl is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish ‘Camel Jockeys,’ and they have no chance to win in the world,” Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, said in an email to NBCNews.com. ....................
  • Are you kidding....I saw nothing racist about this ad. Now look st some of these comments, now that's racism.
  • Absolutely!
  • Racist my a$$ I, like others, are so tired of everything the ragheads don't like as being racist!
  • Very persuasive comment, SmilinJack. Wonder why the crazy "ragheads" feel like they're the objects of ridicule and resentment in this country?
  • IF ARABS THINK TREATING WOMEN AS THIRD CLASS AND NOT LETTING THEM GO TO SCHOOL OR LIVING UP TO WHAT THE QARAN says and killing in the name of ALLAH which is wrong and living in the 1800 then they are racist
  • Everybody is a racist according to the current administration. So much so that the word has little, if any, effect on anyone. Frankly I don't give a rats behind if I am called a racist, I KNOW I am not so screw those who do!
  • So if the camels win, is it still "racist?" Don't any of these Arab and Muslim institute leaders know anything about their culture? Anyone with an education knows there is a reason why you use camels in the desert; I think the finale is obvious - the horses will collapse and everyone else will run out of gas and the camels will win. Actually, revise that = Lance Armstrong will come out of nowhere on his bike and win.
  • I didn't see any RPG's or People blowing themselves to pieces.
No one was screaming "ALAH" or whoever. So keep the ad Coca-Cola and make a sequel for next year.
  • OMG, every thing is racist. I'm insulted that they didn't specifically identify EVERY SINGLE RACE depicted in the commercial.

It's time to take a chill pill.

There are people being shot and killed around every corner, young children are being kidnapped and held in bunkers by crazy men, a man that worked in a call center went crazy at a lawsuit mediation and killed a person. Twenty six people, most all VERY young children were killed in what was supposed to be one of the safest places in their little world, school.

Now, the arabs, middle eastern, mediteranian, people are upset that the damn camel wasn't running??

It's time to get our priorties straight.

It's a funny commercial, get over it and move on to more important things!!
  • I like that one retards comments about White and Pedophilia. Only a retard would make that comment. Assuming that no other race has child molesters or people who sell off their children into slavery or marry their under age children off to adults. But no its the White man who is a child molester.. You are truly a worthless DNA sample!!

As for the commercial COKE do yourself a favor and remove that camel monkey from the commercial and problem solved. Do not apologize to those retards for anything!! They are another example of worthless DNA. Hmm wonder if that sounded racist? Well to any Muslim who hates me because I am not Muslim then HELL YEA I intended it to be racist!! Do not like it then ask me if I give a ratz "PIG" arse!! Trust me I will not apologize!!! =)
  • I do not see the commercial as being racist in any way.I can't understand how some people can look at something and always try to find a hidden meaning. I think it should be aired. You can't please all of the people all of the time.
  • ...All of the people ANY of the time.
  • Bikers should be the ones mad, not the "stupid" Arabs, . . . bikers are always the ones portrayed as being dirty and trashy.
  • I'm more offended by how the Americans are depicted in this commercial.
They make us out to be dumb rednecks, dirty women, and no good thugs.
On second thought "That's us, America!"
  • They had two TV shows Married with children and Archie Bunker
  • Stop all Muslim immigration here and you won't have this problem.
  • Maybe the camel was constipated.
  • if this is racist then get a life
  • somebody needs to get off the "racist" kick, but i think the commercial sucks!
  • For once I would like to see a company say "so sue us" and a judge say "are you serious?" If this is the fight you take up, you really have no problems. If this ad offends you, don't drink Coke. But this is getting ridiculous, I heard even vegetables are trying to sue Taco Bell for one of their ads... VEGETABLES!?!? There is actually a coalition for VEGETABLES! THIS is what's killing our country.
  • Leave the ad alone and let it run. We are all about free speech. If there are some that don't like it let them complain after the fact. Remember that complaining cost my kids the need to say the pledge of allegiance and those pesky prayers that used to start the schoolday. Personally I think we have done a really good job at not stepping on the feet of 300 million people. We still have an immigration problem or so I have been told. Must not be too bad here cause that slow boat from the east isn't coming here empty and those people to our south are still sneaking in here daily.
  • The muslims started this problem and now it is time to reflect on them.
    Destroy radical Islam.
NUKE IRAN. Cut off the head of the snake that provides weapons and training to all of our enemies and whose only goal is to spread radical Islamic beliefs. All Koran's should be burned. Pastor Terry Jones in FL had it right when he put the Korans on trial as being a book of evil and hatred, found it guilty and burned it.
All the Palestinians are, are sheep caught in the middle of a power struggle between the Hamas arm of Iran and Israel. Hamas could care little about what happens to the sheep. Their only goal is to spread radical Islam throughout the middle east. It would not matter who occupied Israel's lands, as long as they were not muslims, they would be under attack.I hope Israel drives them back into the sea and destroys all of their weapons.
If the Palestinians really wanted peace, they would be irrigating their lands and growing crops, instead of shooting Iranian rockets into Israel.
These radical muslim nuts are the same as the Taliban.
I hope the Israeli army moves in with bulldozers and drives these Islamic radicals into the sea, then converts Gaza into a National Park.
