Sunday night may have been the last chance Randy Moss will have to capture a Super Bowl ring, and his team came up short once again. The San Francisco 49ers turned Super Bowl XLVII into a close game, but the Baltimore Ravens were in charge for most of the night. One of the most devastating plays for the Niners came in the second quarter, when Colin Kaepernick threw an interception with his team already trailing 14-3.

The pass was intended for Moss, and although it sailed a bit high you have to wonder if he could have at least gotten a hand on it by extending himself. Instead, he watched it sail over his head and into the arms of Ed Reed. This infuriated Bill Romanowski, who laced into Moss during the Niners’ postgame show on Comcast SportsNet.

“Randy Moss alligator armed it, he didn’t go up for the ball!” Romanowski said while gradually raising his voice, via CSNBayArea.com. “He said he was the best receiver in the DAMN world — ok, you hear me? OH GOD! That’s what pisses me off! You’re playing in the SUPER BOWL, guys!”

Just as a 60-yard touchdown down the middle of the field is vintage Moss, so too is giving up on a play. He may feel that he is the most skilled player to ever play the position, but Moss never had a chance at being the best of all time due to a lack of effort. Would he have changed the outcome of the game had he broken up the pass? Could he even have reached it? We’ll never know, but we wouldn’t have to ask these questions if he at least made an effort. That’s simply Randy being Randy, and it may be one of the many reasons he’ll likely never win a ring.

  • As a former wide receiver I would have to agree with Romanowski. It is the receiver's responsibility to protect the ball. If you can't secure the ball at least swat it down with one hand.

  • You're an idiot. Look at the video. Moss would have to be 7'6" and jump 4 feet in the air. The ball went 5 yards behind him. Flacco would have laid it right in there, as Moss was open. Crappydick wasn't too accurate.

  • Moss... had a colorful career and Culpeppar made him a star. It was incredibly egotistical for a player in that position to go out and make that claim, and THEN quit on a route in the SB. In my humble opinion, Moss (given his experience) should have read that pass as being over thrown, reached up (go vertical given his height) and make that pass uncatchable. If you watch the replay, he does nothing! Like thousands of fans at the game, he watches the pass get picked off. The greatest reciever of all times... would NOT do that. Cut him...

  • I can;t believe it actually. All year long Moss has very patiently put up with having very few passes thrown to him, he has according to his coach and fellow players been a huge help in mentoring Crabtree along with others and now this. As soon as the game is lost throw it all on a terrible pass thrown to Randy Moss. Okay maybe to make everyone like this Romo character happy he should have leaped 10 feet straight up in the air and swatted it down and it would have been a lesson in futility. Or maybe when he came down one of his knees or ankles would have gone the wrong way and he would have been injured on an uncatchable pass. Always a bunch of armchair quaterbacks talking and talking. Well I love Randy Moss and I think he did nothing wrong and I hope he gets a team with a decent quarterback if he decides to play another year or two. Gosh but Ben would love him in Pittsburgh.

  • In his youth Randy was awesome. I even named my golden retreiver after him, but, he had his chances and he just got too sure of himself and cocky and stopped putting forth any effort. As far as getting a good quarterback, come on, he has played with some of the best. The Pat's cut him for the same reason, not putting forth enough effort. He is capable, he just thinks that he is soo good that he doesn't have to try!

  • I was thinking the same thing, UKJeff; that if he'd have jumped and waved at the ball, he might have affected Ed Reed's judgment of the trajectory and maybe he reacts differently and doesn't pick it off. But yeah, no one will ever know.
    Also, looking at the replay, I don't know that Moss even saw Reed behind him...not that that's an excuse.

  • I was stunned at the bad play calling by Jim Harbaugh and the non-calls by the referees to notice Randy Moss. When the lights mysteriously went out, I figured that it was a "Dinozzo directed at Jim" for not coaching the 49ers. My 12 year old son noticed it and asked at the end of the game "if the Ravens won by default?!?" It looked, smelled and ended bad for the 49ers because it was a joint effort to let "Ray Lewis have his storybook ending for his career and not because of Randy Moss." I know you need something to lash out at and Randy was your choice. The Niners didn't stand a chance when their coaching staff didn't give them a game plan that worked in the first half until the lights went out. Unfortunately, the missed holding call that allowed the touchdown by Jones really made this game stink even more. Missed call after call after call will not allow any team to win a game in the last 4 seconds. Kaepernick and the niners should not blame themselves for because this one was already in the bag. Vegas odd makers knew of Kaepernick's potential but he wasn't given the chance to make history. It's a total lack of integrity that makes watching the Playoffs and Super Bowl over the past 8 years that has taken the taste out of my mouth. Shame on them!

  • Don't know what he was seeing. It was so far overthrown that it wasn't worth making an attempt at catching it. Look at how far Reed is down the field from him. I guess a better camera angle would have helped, but it appears that the ball is a good 6 to 7 feet over his head. Who on this planet could have caught that where Moss was positioned.

  • A few things here. #1.For the people that write on here, "who cares what Romo thinks", well obviously Comcast Sports Net does. That's why they hired him to give his opinion. #2. As soon as I saw the replay of the interception I thought immediately that moss made no attempt at the throw. If he could've just tipped it Ed Reed may not of caught it. #3. randy moss has done this before and because of this and his own admission that he "takes plays off" he will always be scrutinized for this and rightfully so. #4. For anyone that thinks Romo is a piece of crap, that may be true, but I can guarantee you he will always give 110% on the football field at all times unlike the loser that is randy moss. #5. The wide receiver that most people think is the greatest ever, Jerry Rice was never scrutinized for his lack of effort, hustle or committment which is why moss should never be mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Rice.
