Former MLB relief pitcher Mark Knudson has an interesting take on the debate surrounding gay athletes in professional sports. In a column he wrote for Mile High Sports, Knudson attempted to put some of his puzzling thoughts into words. He came off as incredibly ignorant.

Knudson argues that gay athletes should remain in the closet for the sake of team chemistry. He says that unlike a “normal workplace,” it is the job of a professional sports organization to maintain a level of “teamness.” In Knudson’s opinion, coming out as gay — which he described as an individual having their own personal agenda — would compromise what the team is trying to accomplish. I’ll let him take it from here:

Just as absurd as comparing workplace environments is the ridiculous claim by some in the gay community that there wouldn’t be any sort of physical attraction for a gay athlete toward any of his straight teammates – which would cause those very uncomfortable situations. He’s gay; he’s not dead. He can’t just flip a switch and turn off his feelings when he walks into the locker room.

Of course he’s going to have feelings of attraction toward a teammate or two. It’s human nature. These are some of the most physically fit and desirable human beings on the planet. The gay athlete isn’t going to notice that? And obviously, the straight teammates are going to feel the same sort of vibe that the attractive girl on the co-ed softball team gets from a few of the men on her team. Attractive people know when they’re being “checked out” and it leads to those very awkward moments. It’s human nature for people to be attracted to other people and it’s not going to stop happening because the workplace environment is a locker room rather than a typical office setting.

If you thought this former Bears quarterback’s take on gay athletes bordered on ridiculous, you should really get a charge out of Knudson’s stream of thoughts. The former Brewers pitcher insists that he feels there is absolutely nothing wrong with a gay athlete playing professional sports, but he used a regrettable analogy in an attempt to make his point.

"Every other work place environment has long ago accepted the idea of having openly gay co-workers. What’s wrong with pro athletes?" The answer is nothing. There’s nothing wrong with pro athletes that isn’t wrong with the attractive woman in the office who is uncomfortable with being gawked at.

Those of you who think like me may have instantly thought of the scene in “American Wedding” where Stiffler is offended that a gay man says he would not sleep with him because “everyone wants a piece of the Stiffmeister.” The difference there is “American Wedding” is a movie, and the dialogue was supposed to be a joke. The fact this is Knudson’s actual take on the matter is disturbing.

  • ANOTHER dumba$$ jock who's been hit in the head w/ a ball too many times.
  • Mark knudson has a right to his opinion. Is the fact he is not gay means he doesn't have the right of free speech. I wouldn't want another man leering after me.
  • Or behind me if the soap should slip in the shower. It is what it is...out of the closet and seperate changing and shower facilities. It is all about one's sexual preference when undressed in a business environment.
  • After this nearly incomprehensible bilious diatribe, we are then subjected to the haute intellectuality of American Wedding.
What Knudson said made perfect sense to anyone who would utterly loathe the idea of being leered at by a promulgated poofter who is a teammate.
  • And what makes you think ANY gay athlete would be "leering" at any teammate in the showers or locker room? This is nothing but hoary old homophobia that thinks they have anything to be leered AT. Every homophobe is absolutely CERTAIN that he has such a magnificent "package" that even a gay man who knows a guy is straight and homophobic would STILL be uncontrollably compelled to come on to him. What a crock! Gay men are attracted to other gay men, and don't want anything to do with straight men as sex objects. If a gay teammate knew you were straight, you'd have to be hung to the FLOOR before he'd give your privates even a first glance, let alone a second one. (And if you were hung to the floor, all your STRAIGHT teammates would be staring...)
  • I think Larry Brown is incredibly ignorant. Nice attempt at steering public opinion. Someone who wants to use another mans sewer as a substitute for a woman does not belong in a locker room. I wonder if the writer is out of the closet yet, he seems close.
  • You mean a gay man has no business in a locker room - even if he's a better player than his straight teammates? I don't know which is bigger: your homophobia or your ego.

Sixty years ago most pro athletes felt that a black man had no business sharing a locker room with white men. Are male egos REALLY that fragile?
  • yep, he's entitled to his opinion......i'm pretty sure a lot of guys feel this way.....guys are way more threatened by gay men than women are of lesbians....why is that??? i've seen straight guys nearly turn apoplectic when hit on by a gay man....the women i've known who've been hit on by lesbians think it's hysterical! is it because of the ridiculous myth that gay men can't control themselves??? from what i've seen in the news in recent years, it's the straight ones who can't keep it in their pants.....

  • I've been a part of gay society in New York City since my teens - more than half a century - and I've yet to observe a gay man actually hitting on a straight man. I've seen them act flirty, but it was only to get a rise out of someone who's sent some sort of a signal that he's homophobic. Just mockery - not interest. Gay males learn REAL early that to even glance at a straight man who has doubts about his own masculinity can mean an ass-whuppin'. So they need serious signals before they'll even smile at another man. The way some of these guys feel so threatened, you'd think they were Adonis and Apollo rolled into one...
  • Is Larry Brown responsible for writing this stupid story? Who the hell is he for calling anyone 'incredibly ignorant' for expressing their informed opinion about lockerroom attitudes. These wannabe sports writers are so incredibly jealous that they will never be as relevant as the athletes that they cover.
  • If sports want gays coming out of 'the closet' and into the locker room...just, please, make sure that there are seperate showering and dressing facilities. It is what it is and if a homosexual likes men and their private parts which we men all have, well, everyone needs to be respected. It is what it is.
  • Poor Larry Brown is the ignorant one here. So wretchedly and transparently politically correct is his castigation of Mark Knudson one speculates whether it's really pc or...is...it...
  • I see the thought police have made it to the sports page. Knudson grew up in a gifferent generation with different morals. Because he doesn't fit your mind set, he's wrong.Yeah right
  • I'm really tired of all these gays and homo's that want everyone to accept there lifestyle as "normal" and anyone who doesn't is considered "igornant". The FACT is homosexualtly IS WRONG and gross, and contrary to nature. You never see a animal of the same sex trying to have sex with another animal of the same sex. . Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? For this very reason. Look up the word sodomy. He hasn't change his view on this, and won't, just because this world wants everyone to accept that lifestyle. I keep hearing.."there is nothing wrong with being gay" when the FACT of the matter is,there is ALOT WRONG with it.
  • My lord, but you are SOOOO full of $hit! Gays don't want everyone to accept them (it's not a "lifestyle," you ignorant Neanderthal) as "normal;" they just want them to accept them as "different" and no more or less. Just like people like you were compelled to accept blacks as different, not subhuman. There are actually MANY lower animals that practice homosexuality, starting with chimps and Republicans and moving down the species ladder. The Sodom and Gomorrah story that's part of your comic book today isn't in the original Aramaic scriptures. It was a deliberate mistranslation into Greek ordered by a 6th Century bishop to conform to his personal prejudices. Every reputable biblical scholar knows that. As for "looking up" the word "sodomy"... Are you trying to claim that your imaginary friend in the sky edits the dictionary...???
  • Awkwardness...??? Oh, my GOD! How can they survive THAT? It's...it's...it's almost as if they might be expected to act like ADULTS...!!!! I hate to break it to you clowns, but gay men are NOT interested in your "package" the way you like to think. A gay jock is NOT cruising the locker room or showers looking for a big johnson to suck, no matter what myths you choose to believe. First, that would be the easiest way to get yourself beaten to within an inch of your life. Second, gay men are interested in other gay men, not straight men - no matter how impressive you think your equipment is. Third, the ones in the shower and locker room who are looking at schwanzes are the other STRAIGHT men, comparing their endowment to others'. A gay player just wants to be left alone to play his sport - sorta the way Jackie Robinson did in the Forties.
  • You're really gonna compare these pixies to Jackie Robinson? Really? Now race is injected so we have to run and hide? Way different issue. How do you know so much about how a sodomite feels in the locker room anyway?
  • Hey, i got to share a locker room with my female co-workers, I'd sure be checking them out, whether they were straight or gay. I'd say they would probably feel uncomfortable, even if I were being discreet and just seeking a peek or two. For this "author" to turn this into his own soapbox is totally uninformed and disingenuous. I've been on a lot of teams and in locker rooms my whole life and the player is stating the obvious. He should not be subject to this kind of attack. I'd say openly gay players would be uncomfortable, especially with the media circus it would create, but everyone would be more comfortable in an uncomfortable situation if separate dressing and shower areas were provided.
  • Is everybody here saying straight men don't check out eachother in the locker room? It happens all the bloody time. The fact is a locker room is just teeming with homoeroticism. You have a bunch of men with latent homosexual feelings and here's this place where it all comes to the fore. It really is an incredibly gay place. And the only reason a straight man would not want a gay man in the locker is because in a way the gay man would be the personification of all their latent homosexual thoughts and desires. It's sexual insecurity plain and simple
  • Jerry Sandusky said they can be on his team.
  • Sandusky was a heterosexual, not a homosexual. At least that what his wife swears. The truth is that 95% of all child molesters are heterosexual. And most of them are family members, relatives, or friends of the parents. Though youth coaches have been getting a lot of press lately. But ALWAYS heterosexual in their dealings with other adults. To pedophiles the gender of the child is immaterial.

  • always some group starting something.just play the game and shut up.
  • Knudson is right. Why don't men and women share locker rooms? Because no one should be subjected to the humiliation of disrobing in front of others that may be sexually attracted. Isn't the whole issue of "being gay" that you can't help who you're attracted to? If you are going to argue that someone can't help being gay then you can't turn around and argue that they CAN control who they are attracted to.
